Over the past 5 years, PHOS has been on our vendor roster for 90% of our events. No project is too big and nothing is too out of the ordinary. From creating abstract structures to secure florals to custom gobos and beautiful chandeliers, PHOS makes visions come to life and continues to amaze us planners!
Phos offers a wide range of lighting features. Check out all of their services here.
Here is what PHOS had to say when we reached out for a chat.
WHAT IS THE BACKGROUND OF PHOS EVENTS? HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THIS INDUSTRY?
I have been in the industry for 20 years. Wow, time flies by. Phos started as I saw a need for what we offer in events in our area. It's been a great ride and I look forward to the coming years.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT WORKING IN THIS INDUSTRY?
Collaborating with fellow vendors to figure out how to construct and execute the vision of a client. We have so many talented vendors in the Twin Cities and I am so thankful I get to work with these creative people every day.
WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM YOUR COMPETITORS?
I would say we set ourselves apart by our product we carry but more importantly a high level of customer service. We take a lot of pride in making sure that a client's whole experience with us is perfect.
WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR INSPIRATION FOR YOUR INSTALLATIONS AND LIGHTING?
A lot comes from just thinking of cool new ways to light a space. Also we get a ton of inspiration from our planners and florist partners.
WHAT IS ONE THING YOU WILL NOT GO TO AN EVENT WITHOUT?
Light bulbs, gaff tape, and zip ties.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL WEDDING DAY LOOK LIKE FrOM YOUR PERSPECTIVE?
We are normally the first vendor onsite as we prepare the lighting and hanging installations for floral. Our team works quickly to make sure the day stays on time and we are finished on time with our tasks. We then will tech the event if needed or come back when it concludes to tear down.
WHAT IS THE MOST UNIQUE INSTALLATION THAT YOU HAVE DONE IN THE PAST?
I think the most unique install is always changing, which I believe is a good thing as we are always trying new things and purchasing new inventory.
WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU HAVE FOR NEW PLANNING COUPLES THAT WANT AN INSTALLATION?
Get your team in place first. Book your florist, planner, and lighting vendor. It makes things much easier and streamlines the process. Also if an installation is important to you make sure you book a venue where it is possible to do.
WHAT KIND OF EXPERIENCE SHOULD COUPLES EXPECT WHEN WORKING WITH YOU?
We start chatting through vision and then pricing to land on packages that will transform their venue that keep within their budget.
WHAT ARE SOME THINGS THAT WE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT YOU?
I love to windsurf in my freetime. The ocean is my happy place and in winters I try to escape to warm sunny beaches as much as I can!
“As a wedding planner, Phos is my go-to business for event lighting services. Working with Adam is always a collaborative effort. I greatly appreciate his expertise with what will look amazing and his guidance in the mechanics behind custom installations. As a designer, I am thrilled at his willingness to expand his inventory with new products that stay ahead of trends. Adam is professional and always delivers amazing results.”

Vendor Feature Q&A - Lena Lakoma
Are you a bride that dreams of looking like a fashion model on your big day? If so, then Lena Lakoma is the photographer for you! Lena is a Twin Cities based photographer who specializes in weddings and fashion. She started her career in New York City as a fashion photographer and her work has been featured in Modern Bride, Minnesota Bride, Your Prom, Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan and TV Guide. As wedding photography trends have changed the past few years and couples have opened up to new ideas, often looking for fresh, unconventional images, Lena realized she could bring something different and her own aesthetic into the world of weddings. Lena loves working with couples craving a fresh, creative approach and a cinematic, editorial style, with that little bit of drama! Lena loves to bring out the fashion and natural beauty in all of her couples.
Check out what Lena had to say when we reached out to chat!
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHING WEDDINGS?
Weddings bring so much deep meaning into my job as a photographer. It’s incredible how fast a bond is created between me and my couples. We spend the entire day together and I’m there not just to keep my eyes open and document such a momentous and yet intimate time but I’m there to support them, to make them feel comfortable when they worry, to share their amazing joy and to crack a joke when they could use one.
What I also absolutely love is watching my couples relax and gain confidence with every click of the camera during their session. It’s an incredible transformation and it’s all in the eyes and the gestures.
And of course, wow, it is such an honor to photograph people on their most emotional and true day, when they so look fabulous and so happy, to create images that will have them feeling those emotions forever. I love telling those love stories and telling them with the full glamour of the day.
WHAT DIFFERENTIATES YOU FROM OTHER PHOTOGRAPHERS?
My wedding work is heavily influenced by my fashion background, my editorial take on fashion and by my fascination with documenting. Fashion shows in posing, the light, the angles, the lenses I use, and even in the way I direct. I don’t spend a lot of time on old, traditional poses. The goal is to make a couple feel glamorous and natural at the same time. Some of my shots may be cinematic, some sweet, some have drama, but they all bring out true personalities and who they are as a unit. Their own brand of love, sexiness, glam or joy. I mix direction and spontaneity to create intimate and organic images. I also really pay attention throughout the day, document, document, document. Last but not least, my editing process is very particular to create that signature look and feel in my images. Each image is handled with lots of care to make sure it reaches its highest potential.
WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR INSPIRATION AND MOTIVATION?
Each bride, each dress is different. Each couple connects in a different way. With that in mind, I always scout the venue and the area for fun locations before the wedding day. I love to walk around with my camera and think. Would Jen and Chris look cool on that couch? Should I shoot from above? Always looking for interesting angles that lend to a mystery and fit the dynamic of the couple. Should I have them run, have her jump on his back, or should I have them just chill. It’s a process, I like to be alone when I do it. Sometimes a bride or groom will share their ideas; they may want film noir inspired shots or they may send me a vintage Ralph Lauren ad as an inspiration. It can get really exciting, I can play with that concept. But also, it's amazing when they just say: we trust you Lena, do your thing! Engagement sessions are a great way for us to get to know each other before the wedding day so I know their energy when I plan. Within all that planning, once I’m there, I just let things happen, let the dynamic of the couple lead. Some people are goofy and laugh a lot, some are steamy, some are quiet. It all feeds the energy. Last but not least, I absolutely love to hunt for special moments and be invisible. Bride flying a kite, mom wiping off tears or a stolen kiss.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TIME OF YEAR TO SHOOT?
I’m a seasons girl, love change. Fall colors, snowy days, late summer afternoons with long shadows. Love them all.
BESIDES YOUR CAMERA, WHAT IS ONE THING THAT YOU ALWAYS HAVE IN YOUR BAG ON AN EVENT DAY?
A reflector! It will paint beautiful light on my bride’s face, will block hot sun if necessary, will sometimes serve as a picnic blanket for a tired couple and works wonders as an impromptu fan on a hot day!
WHAT ARE SOME THINGS THAT WE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT YOU?
I have twin boys and the cutest dog named Lulu. I’m Polish not French. I love swimming, high heels and camping in wild places like the Amazon. I like getting flowers more than getting chocolates. I will get dirty to get that amazing shot!
WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE FOR NEWLY ENGAGED COUPLES?
Celebrate that amazing time! If things go crazy, slow down to smell the flowers. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Let your planner take care of you, they will make your day a dream, so you can focus on each other. Take a few private moments away from your guests during your wedding day. Trust your photographer. I promise you, you will look beautiful!
Vendor Feature Q&A: Doggy Social
There’s truly nothing better than having your furry friend by your side on your big day! Cue Doggy Social, a growing company that provides professional wedding pet attendant services for all of MN and beyond.
Combining her love for animals and passion for weddings is owner Lara Leinen's dream come true! With her 10+ years experience in planning and coordinating creative weddings, her professional yet kind-hearted demeanor and her ability to quickly build trusted relationships with animals of all types make her the perfect wedding pet attendant! We asked her a few questions to give us a PAWfect glimpse of who they are and what they do!
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT DOGGY SOCIAL (for those who don’t already know)!
“We are an all-inclusive and custom Pet Wedding Attendant Service serving MN, WI and beyond. We chauffeur your pup to the wedding, help them throughout the day with pictures, visiting, the ceremony, social hour and get them safely home, all while giving them all our love and care while you and your friends are enjoying the day. We essentially eliminate any concerns you may have with having your pup there for a little or as long as you like. We are also fully insured, have our current Pet CPR certification, will build a custom Pinterest board fur your pup for pic and attire ideas, provide a complimentary leash and collar set as well as take a few behind the scenes pics of your pup that we send to you the week after your wedding as you are waiting for your paw-mazing professional pics from your photographer!”
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO START THIS AMAZING BUSINESS?
“I had been a wedding planner fur years and stepped away to explore other opportunities, but realized how truly happy it made me to help create a pawfect day fur a couple, so I started a blog of helpful wedding planning advice. While doing this, I adopted my pup, Asbjorn, and he completely turned my life right side up! He inspired me to not only spend more time with him during my days, but also combine my passion fur weddings and love of animals! I honestly didn't know how many people would be interested in having their animals involved in their weddings, but I knew I wanted to provide the service to anyone that did and I knew, if I could be great at anything, I just knew this had to be it. I didn't have my pup yet when I got married, but I really wanted a pic of my cat and me, but I never said one word to anyone. This pic never happened, because who was going to help? I don't want another person to miss this super sweet opportunity again!”
DO YOU OFFER SERVICES FOR OTHER ANIMALS AS WELL?
“Oh yes! We have attended a kitty and I think we may have bunnies next year! I am very excited to be asked about other fur-babes!”
WHAT IS THE MOST UNIQUE WAY THAT YOU’VE SEEN A PET INCORPORATED INTO A COUPLE’S WEDDING DAY?
“Every single wedding is so unique because it's a genuine and personal connection that the couple has with their fur-babes. It really is so incredible to be a part of! It is fun when the pup stays fur social hour. Guests just saw your sweet pup go down the aisle and now they can say hi as they enjoy a drink...honestly, best social hour ever! We also have chauffeured pups adventuring around the city meeting up with the couple and the photographer as they take fun pics together! A big part of our job is to help your photographer capture those pawfect moments and we have learned SO much from photographers on how to best help them and the pups during photos.”
WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU SHARE WITH ENGAGED COUPLES WHO WANT TO INCLUDE THEIR PUP IN THEIR WEDDING?
“First of all, don't immediately shut down the idea because it seems like too much to deal with, we really do help figure all that out and gladly take care of it all on your Big Day. Also, if your pups don't do well with lots of people, we can easily bring them to you fur a few adorable moments and pics with them in an intimate setting with your photographer and then bring them right back home. This way it's not overwhelming fur your pup and you get those precious moments with them. Also, I have found that when pups are just a little tired from the day, they do a little bit better during the ceremony. So, have them get a good run in, or social time before the ceremony, which we absolutely can do with your pup!”
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL WEDDING DAY LOOK LIKE FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE?
“They are all a little or a lot different from each other, but typically, and in short, we bring your pup the ceremony site for photos before the ceremony, help set them up fur the ceremony and then usually take them home fur the night. We make sure they are fed, had time to go out once again and usually they are ready to sleep away the evening at that point!”
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?
“Well, your pups. We absolutely love, respect and adore all animals, so we take great pride in having the honor of being responsible fur them on your Big Day. Seeing the love between the couple and their pup brings me to tears a little every single time, I am even getting a little teary-eyed right now as I write this thinking of my most recent weddings. Your friends and family LOVE that your fur-babe is there as well and we love providing a service that allows them all to fully enjoy your pup being there without any of the responsibility. Funny enough, the hardest part of the job is also your pup, because leaving them at the end of the day is SO hard!”
How to Mail Your Invitations in 6 Easy Steps
As wedding planners, we get a lot of questions from our couples about invitations. We received some very helpful advice from our friends at Paper Rock Scissor, and wanted to share it with you!
STEP ONE: STAMP YOUR INVITATIONS
To make it easy for your guests to submit their RSVPs, it is strongly encouraged that you stamp your RSVP cards. A standard forever stamp will do the trick for a card that has an envelope. Otherwise, a less expensive postcard stamp will work well for postcard RSVPs.
STEP TWO: ADDRESS YOUR INVITATIONS
If you stationery vendor or calligrapher addressed the envelopes for you, it’s important to double check the completed envelopes against your list to ensure there aren’t any discrepancies. While your vendors will check them before you pick them up, you can never have too many eyes on this crucial detail! If you find that you need additional envelopes printed, please send your stationery vendor a list that details all of the reprints that you need. They will get them completed for you as quickly as possible!
STEP THREE: STUFF YOUR INVITATIONS
Proper etiquette is to stack the materials - putting the invitation on the bottom and layering the other pieces (i.e. details, map, RSVP card, etc.) with the largest on the bottom to the smallest on the top. RSVP cards should be tucked into the flap of the RSVP envelope so that the flap covers part of the text. With the envelope face down and back flap up, place the cards (printed side up) into the envelope. You want to be sure to stuff them so that a right-handed person could start reading everything as they pull it out of the envelope (sorry, lefties)!
STEP FOUR: SEAL YOUR INVITATIONS
Paper Rock Scissor recommends keeping it old school by licking the envelopes to seal them. Press down the flap and firmly seal the envelope in place by running your fingers back and forth over the seal while pressing down. If you wish, you can stack your invitations (flap down) under a book or other heavy object while they dry to ensure a good seal! If you choose to use a product or washcloth to wet your envelopes, be careful not to over-wet them or wipe the glue off as this can compromise the envelopes.
STEP FIVE: WEIGH YOUR STUFFED ENVELOPES
Have a completed invitation you will be mailing weighed at the post office to determine the amount of postage that will be needed for mailing. Invitations can be larger and heavier (or thicker) than a typical letter, so don’t be surprised if you need more postage than normal! The post office offers an array of stamp designs that are the most common denominations needed for mailings. For the best selection, try shopping online (www.usps.com), or you can ask your stationery vendor about custom artwork to order personalized stamps.
STEP SIX: MAIL YOUR INVITATIONS!
Paper Rock Scissor suggests bringing your invitations into the post office to be mailed, rather than dropping them off in a box. If you wish, you can request (or pay) for the invitations to be hand-processed or hand-canceled. Most post offices try to keep hand-canceled mail separate from regular mail, but even if the local branch sorts by hand, there is no guarantee that your invitations won’t go through processing machines later in their journey to your guests.
{Local} Spring Floral Inspiration
We have officially survived yet another long and cold winter… Yay! After these brutal Minnesota winters, one of our favorite things about the season change is the stunning floral that comes with it. The brilliant pops of color are much needed after spending months in a wintery darkness. Here in the Twin Cities, we are lucky to have a wide range of incredibly talented floral designers. They are creative geniuses, always seeking out the freshest looks while adding their own personal flare. Two local designers have specifically caught our eye this season and have blown us away with their spring creations on Instagram. Liz Mattingly with Lilia Flower Boutique and Ashley Fox with Ashley Fox Designs have both done an incredible job at intertwining the hottest spring floral trends and their own artistic talent to design unbelievable creations we just have to share.

Paper Rock Scissor Vendor Feature
Started in 2008, Paper Rock Scissor is a custom wedding invitation studio that specializes in wedding stationery and has long been a relied upon vendor of Style-Architects Weddings & Events. So, when we heard owner Kate was selling the business, we decided to reach out to new owner Liz to get the scope on her plan for the business. We quickly discovered that Liz is just as lovely and fabulous to work with (though, of course, Kate is missed). Check out what Liz had to say when we reached out for a chat.

What types of services does Paper, Rock, Scissor offer?
We focus on Custom Wedding Stationery. So that includes save the date cards, invitation suites, envelope addressing, rehearsal dinner invitations, programs, table numbers, place cards, menus, address wraps/labels, guestbook signs, thank you notes, custom napkins, cigar wraps, popcorn bags, ice cream cups, drink stirrers, stickers, and pretty much any paper product you can think of! We work on other projects on a case by case basis, but our focus is on weddings.
Could you tell us why you decided to buy a stationery company and why Paper Rock Scissor specifically?
It really was something that was meant to be! I have always been involved in art and design. I went to school for Fashion Design and I started my design career creating clothing. I had my fashion business, Cocoon, here in the Twin Cities for 7 years. As life evolved, I grew more and more drawn to creating and designing in the graphic design medium. When I came back to Minnesota, after some time away in San Francisco, the opportunity to buy Paper Rock Scissor presented itself and I jumped at the chance. It was one of those Manifest Destiny moments. It really has been a dream of mine for a long time. Kate, the previous owner, and I always laugh and say how the Universe wanted this to happen. I feel very lucky.
What has been your favorite part so far on this new venture?
I have truly loved getting to know Kate, the previous owner, and the studio manager here Maggie, and seeing how they have really shaped such a warm and wonderful business. The customers feel welcome and taken care of, it has a great energy.
Photographer: Fairlight (Left), Becca Dilley Photography (Right)
What direction are you hoping to take with this business and in what ways do you hope to see it grow?
I think there's a great opportunity to grow Paper Rock Scissor. I think there's such an amazing foundation to what makes PRS special. No matter what I just plan to continue with that wonderful tradition of great design, quality printing, and exceptional customer service.
With a background in the fashion industry, how did you end up in this industry?
As I mentioned, I have a strong background in art and design. It was a natural evolution from one medium to another. I had been doing the graphic design work for Cocoon as well as other side projects for many years. I had always had a passion for it, and this was a great way to transition. My roles between the two companies are very similar, business owner and principal designer.
What is your favorite part in the process of creating such beautiful and elaborate products?
I really love making a deep lasting impression on the couple and their guests when they open the envelope! That "Wow!" moment they have when they see what we've created for the first time. It sets the tone for the whole event.
Photographer: Melissa Oholendt Photography (Left), Half Acre House (Right)
What kind of experience should couples expect when working with you?
We are here to be on your team. It's a very collaborative experience, but we're also here to take care of you and handle it. We're extremely customer service focused. Like I said it's a warm environment with some fabulous ladies that are here to help!
What sets your business apart from other invitation vendors?
We’re not just a place on the internet where you can order invitations, we’re a group of women that are here to be on your team, and help however we can. From questions on etiquette, wording and addressing, to thinking through exactly what details will have the biggest impact, we bring our enthusiasm, passion and meticulous care to every invitation suite we work on. This is such a busy time for couples, and we know time is at a premium and want to make this process as easy and fun as possible!
What is your inspiration behind the creativity of each of your images?
Each and every event is different since we customize for every project. Sometimes the customers have greenery from their floral arrangements that they want to center the whole suite around, sometimes it's a color palette or a building. Some couples really have a blank slate, which is fun too. That's what makes it so exciting, every project is a new chance to be creative in a different way.

Vendor Feature: Farina Baking Company
Looking for a baking company that is known for couture baked goods? Check out Farina Baking Company. They recently joined the baking industry in 2014 and we are in love with their exquisite cakes and desserts {and the amazing service.} We had the opportunity to chat with Tracy Kohler, Head Pastry Chef and Owner of Farina Baking Company, to get insider details.
"We believe that all the little details matter.
Let us bake your day a little sweeter."
Tell us about Farina. What motivated you to start this business and where does the name come from?
Farina is a dessert based catering company that brings the sweetest treats to all of life’s most important events. We love providing custom cakes, dessert displays and custom sweets. The motivation behind Farina is fueled by a pure passion and a love of what I do! I wanted to create something that I would wake up every single day and be passionate about what I do, be excited to go to, create something that I was proud of and deliver something that made people literally smile! We pride our business with great thoughtfulness and creativity to each event that we do.
Farina is Italian for “Flour”. It was something I saw years ago while traveling through Italy with my husband. The name “Farina” just always stuck with me and when I started this business, my husband’s first question was…… “What are you going to name the company?” and without hesitation I answered “Farina”.
How did your passion for baking began? When did you realize that you wanted to turn this passion into a business?
You hear many bakers and pastry chefs tell you that they have been doing this for years or their love came from their childhood. I am a bit on the other side of the spectrum. My love of baking and pastries came a bit later in life. After I married my husband, I found my love in the kitchen. We would cook at home, travel and eat out quite a bit and I always envisioned myself in the kitchen. No one really understood it, I just always wanted to be the person behind the scenes creating vs. only receiving. At the time I was in Healthcare and on nights and weekends I would go work under various chefs in the Twin Cities. I enjoy the science behind it (I graduated with a Biology degree) and I enjoy the creativity and art behind it. After much discussion, I left my corporate position and worked in a bakery. About a year and half later a couple members of my community were telling me to go to farmers markets! Farina was essentially created and a business was born!
How has the business and its offerings evolved or expanded over the years?
The business has evolved immensely over the past couple of years! It started with our love of pastries and has become a passion for cake and wonderful tasting and presented sweet treats! It evolved the way it did because of our clients. Cake, cupcakes, mini desserts and cookies are automatically included in all types of celebrations. When our customer base requested it for their weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and showers, we started to fulfill the need and fell in love with it!
What differentiates your cakes and desserts from other vendors?
I think Farina Baking Company is one of the few companies in our area that creates great tasting cakes and desserts, phenomenal designs and customizations, and a gratifying customer experience for every one of our clients. We truly pride ourselves in providing all of these elements to ensure your cake and desserts are the highlight of the celebration.
What was your favorite wedding cake to design? What makes it special to you?
That is so difficult to answer because all the wedding cakes we design and create are completed to be special, unique and representative of each couple and their celebration! But one that recently stands out that we created and designed was custom centerpiece cakes for the couple. They wanted each individual cake to lead up to the head table’s cake, incorporating each different element of design at every table! I truly loved working with this couple…. they were so passionate and excited about the cakes being such an integral part of their celebration!
What is your favorite cake flavor?
There are a couple that are on the top of my list! Our hazelnut cake came about from a couple that requested it and asked if I could give a try at it! They said they really wanted to incorporate Scandinavian elements in their wedding. I worked through a couple test rounds before coming up with one for them and they loved it and their guests loved it. With such wonderful feedback, we added it to our menu and it has become one of our most popular flavors. It is moist and has such a distinctive flavor with the slightest hints of coffee. I love it and our couples' eyes always light up during tastings!
But a second runner up would be our white cake with lemon buttercream and fresh raspberries. It is light and so refreshing and perfect for a summer wedding.
What is your most loved baked good?
It’s impossible to pick one!!! But I certainly love a French Macaron! They are the perfect size and sweetness that just hits the spot when you have a sweet tooth.
What kind of experience should couples expect when working with you?
When you come in for a design session, I will decipher your style and together, we will come up with something that is right for you and your celebration. I will sketch up designs to make you smile and get excited.
Quite possibly my favorite process is meeting with the couples for the first time. I love learning how they met, how the proposal happened & what they envision their event to look like. They will always feel welcome and let’s face it who doesn’t love cake!

Vendor Feature: Glam Doll Donuts
Cake seems to be the usual choice of dessert at a wedding, but why not think outside the {cake} box to make it more exciting and unexpected for guests? One of our favorite trendy wedding desserts right now: Donuts! Glam Doll Donuts in Minneapolis makes the tastiest, most unexpected combinations {even for weddings}. Who knew a peanut butter and Sriracha donut could be so amazingly delicious or that cheese works on a donut! We spoke with Arwyn, one of the owners of Glam Doll, to see what inspires her passion for donuts and how they incorporate them into different weddings + events. You’ll want donuts at your wedding {and every Saturday} too!
Tell us about Glam Doll Donuts. How did you start and what makes your donuts so incredibly delicious?
Teresa and I created Glam Doll with the strong vision of incorporating all of our favorite things and our biggest passions. For us, those things are food, fashion, music, arts and anything vintage. The idea hit us like a mallet to the head; the minute it was a tiny concept, it was a driving force. Being lovers of food, creating the menu was extremely fun. We tried to incorporate a comfortable amount of classics that donut lovers would come to expect while still staying focused on daring and delicious combinations that would leave our customers mind blown. I like to say that what makes our donuts so delicious is that we blow a kiss in each and every one but the truth is, a donut crafted from scratch in all of its elements is a beautiful thing. From our dough, icings, glazes and toppings, everything is made 100% from scratch. We source our dairy locally and use only the finest ingredients across the board.
Have you always had a passion for donuts?
We have always had an extreme passion for food. Donuts kind of magically became our vehicle to creating a one of a kind atmosphere where you can not only enjoy delicious hand crafted donuts but also engage further in the culture of the city through art, music and other happenings.
What’s your inspiration behind Glam Doll Donuts and the designs?
We are so lucky to have such an amazingly creative crew at Glam Doll. We draw inspiration from all of our various interests and passions from travel, to theatre, to fashion, and especially music. Every day, we have an incredible time trying to wow our favorite musicians with personalized donuts at First Avenue. And once a year, at Soundset, we really go all out.
What drew you towards weddings?
We were extremely excited when we developed our wedding program. There is nothing we love more than executing a beautiful wedding display. There is so much fun to be had with flavor options, custom colored icings, customized chocolate artwork, tiers, and flowers; the sky is the limit really. If you can dream it up, we can make it happen!
What type of couples have Glam Doll Donuts at their wedding?
The Glam Doll Donuts wedding client wants something a little different than the classic dessert displays that have come to be expected at weddings. Donuts offer so much variety in flavors; your guests can taste multiple pastries without the awkward 2nd slice of cake walk of shame.
What’s been the favorite flavor in stores? At weddings? What’s your personal favorite?
The overwhelming favorite in the shop is hands down the Calendar Girl. Chocolate icing with salted caramel oozing from every bite. The favorite at weddings is generally the vanilla darling as it offers up many options for customizing. My favorite is the Pucker Up. Our light and delicate French cruller topped with 4 beautiful swirls of lemon cream cheese.
What special flavors, shapes, and kinds of donuts are made especially for weddings?
We like to have fun. If you bring us the cutter, we will make a donut in any shape you desire! In terms of flavors, our clients are welcome to mix and match as they please with existing menu elements. The chocolate iced Femme Fatale has been a popular custom wedding option in the past. In terms of custom artwork and color pallets, we can really have a lot of fun. We recently catered a wedding with an 8 tier table display featuring cake donuts and crullers in various pink and cream hues of buttercream. The donuts seemed to flow on for days and the tiers were trickled with baby’s breath and tiny pink rosebuds.
Are there customizable donuts for events?
We have an artist on staff that can create exact replicas of scanned images by hand. In the past, this has extended to include anything from initials to spirit animals to details mirroring wedding invites.
What fun display ideas have you seen for displaying your donuts? Do you help with creating or setting up displays?
There are so many style options available for display beyond the traditional tier route. We encourage our clients to exercise as much involvement with the design process as they would like. We offer a number of tier options however if our client has something specific in mind, we are in the business of making their dreams come true. Flowers are a big component of a gorgeous table display. Our clients most often request our white ceramic tier sets or our clear acrylic tall set so as not to interfere with any other specific styling of the event. We always arrange for a portion of the wedding flowers to be set aside for our use in the display.
What is the experience like for couple who want donuts at their wedding? Tell us about the tasting!
We first invite you to select a complimentary tasting box filled with all of your favorites. You just let us know when you’d like to stop by the shop, and it will be waiting for you in all its glory. Once you’ve had a chance to mull over flavors, you can contact one of our wedding coordinators, and we can begin to fine tune the details of your display. We work with our clients in whatever manner is most convenient for them. We have bookings available for sit-downs at the shop Tuesday-Friday. We often work with clients who do not live in the state and are happy to handle the details via email and/or phone. Once we land on our flavor palette and establish a rough count, we have a number of design options and tier selections for you to choose from. We are also incredibly open creatively as to the design of our displays. If our client has anything specific in mind in the way of aesthetics, we are always happy to accommodate.
Why Glam Doll Donuts? What makes you stand out?
We take a lot of pride in providing a superiorly delicious product with flawlessly beautiful execution. We aren’t afraid to think outside of the box. Our client is looking for something different, and we provide them with the experience they are after. Donuts get ooo’s and ahhh’s; they’re unexpected and fun!
Event Feature: Mary + Nick Rehearsal Dinner
Couples put so much time + energy into their wedding that sometimes rehearsal dinners can become an afterthought. But, of course, not for the rehearsal dinners we plan! You don’t want to give away the actual look of your wedding, but you certainly want it to be special. Rather than putting your guests through all your awkward childhood photos, rehearsal dinners are a great time to showcase these keepsakes to your closest friends and family. Don’t skimp on decor either! Rehearsal dinners can be {almost} as amazing and beautiful as the wedding. Mary + Nick’s was to die for at the trendy rooftop treasure, Stella’s Fish Cafe.
The night began with cocktails and socializing on the sky-deck, followed by an extravagant dinner of filet mignon + raw bar with the couples’ closest friends and family. The surprised + ecstatic looks on their faces when they first saw the decor was such fun to witness.
The burlap details and lush greenery accented the hanging photos above the center table beautifully.
Even the desserts were {perfectly} delicious.

Vendor Feature: Rock With U
Entertainment brings life + excitement to weddings, so when we come across something new and different, we get excited and want to tell our fun-loving brides all about it!
We had the pleasure of discovering Rock With U at Muse Event Center and were instantly hooked by their visual appeal, energy, and uniqueness. The best part? Their group called Fusion. They combine a DJ with a live band, so you truly can have your {wedding} cake and eat it too. We connected with Nick Dwyer, the owner and managing partner, to share with us more about Rock With U. Keep reading to see why we want them at our weddings {and you will too}!
Who is Rock With U?
Rock With U is an entertainment company specializing in events ranging from Weddings, to corporate events, to concerts, and beyond. We offer a number of different services, depending on client need and event type. We offer DJ only, along with Fusion, which is our DJ/Band Hybrid, which can range from 3-piece up to 12-piece. We also offer live strings used for ceremonies as well as acoustic artists for cocktail hours and chill social gatherings.
I know you started in Miami, but how did you end up in Minneapolis?
Rock With U began in Miami almost 9 years ago, and started working events in the Minneapolis area around 2 1/2 years ago, but officially expanded and became Rock With U- Minneapolis in October of 2014. I was born and raised in Minnesota, and Ross, who is the founder of Rock With U, is my cousin, hence the connection to the Minneapolis market.
What makes you special and different from the rest?
Rock With U's focus, whether performing DJ only or 12-piece Fusion, is always centered around continuous energy and flow, achieved through music, MC, and format of the event. From the moment the room opens, you feel the energy and it is maintained throughout. We don't allow dead moments, and ensure seamless transitions and flow during every portion of the night. Our DJs are extremely skilled mixers and hosts, and everything we play, whether its DJ only or Fusion, is free flowing, meaning we read and react to the crowd in front of us to ensure a packed dance floor from start to finish.
What do you love most about performing?
The best part of performing is the connection with the audience/guests. When you see guests having a blast on the dance floor, it provides a connection between them and the DJ/band that is truly hard to explain. It's also amazing to just rock out with the band. Fusion is about energy and fun, not only for the guests, but for the band, and that energy is contagious.
What's the benefit of Fusion over a standard DJ or band?
Fusion is perfect for that couple that wants the best of both worlds, the complete versatility of a DJ, but the live presence, energy, and pop of a band. Fusion provides both, as literally any song a DJ can play, Fusion can play. And again, we never go into an event with a set list, everything is free flowing, and thanks to our amazing musicians, we are able to flow constantly to feed what the audience is feeling that night.
What helpful tips do you have for couples when planning their entertainment for their special day?
I would tell any couple looking to book their entertainment to make sure they meet with whoever is going to be performing at their wedding. Entertainment is so important to the success of the party, and is also very customized to fit exactly what the couple is looking for and what their style/taste is. The way to make sure that happens is to get to know your entertainment. It is extremely beneficial to the couple, but also to the entertainment as it gives them intimate knowledge of what experience the couple wants.

What is it you love most about doing BRIDAL hair/makeup?

What is your current beauty obsession?
I love how hydrated and fresh tinted moisturizer makes the skin look. It can be layered so you can customize the coverage.
What is your FAVORITE classic wedding day look?
My style is soft and romantic for makeup. I love hydrated skin, nude tones on eyelids, smudged eyeliner, full lashes, coral cheeks, and dusty rose lips. For hair, my favorite look is effortless with a lot of dimension and texture.
Why should a bride hire a makeup artist for her big day?
Makeup artists use specific techniques to enhance the facial features. We also have professional products that help the makeup last longer and photograph well.
What should a bride look for in a hair/makeup artist?
Find one that matches your own style and personality. Do your research. Google search the artist and get to know what persona they are projecting on social media.
For the brave ones who want to go about it themselves...any professional advice?
For a gray smokey eye, use a matte grey shadow vs. shimmer. Shimmery grays tend to look shiny in photographs.

The worst beauty mistake a bride can make prior to her wedding day is_____.

Vendor Feature: Kennedy Blue
Finding the right bridesmaids’ dresses for all of your lucky ladies is never easy. Part of our job here at SA Weddings is making sure the process is seamless and fun! The ladies from Kennedy Blue are on the same page as us when it comes to providing stress-free service for brides and their bridesmaids to try on and choose the perfect dress in every color and size. Check out our interview with Danielle Salazar, Kennedy Blue’s Marketing Specialist, who explains what makes Kennedy Blue buzz-worthy.
1. How was Kennedy Blue started?
In 2012, Kennedy Blue was created as an exclusive line for Wedding Shoppe, Inc. when they discovered a need for high-quality wedding attire at an affordable price. The line grew in popularity, exceeded expectations, and became big enough to branch off into its own brand in 2014. Wedding Shoppe, Inc. remains an exclusive retailer of the Kennedy Blue collection.
2. What type of bride do you think fits best with Kennedy Blue?
Kennedy Blue perfectly suits a classic bride looking for a chic, romantic look. Our affordable wedding dresses were designed with simple details so that a bride can easily dress them up or down to suit any venue or personal style.
3. Tell us about the style and fit of your dresses.
We've created high-end styles for brides and bridesmaids that don't carry the high-end price tags. Our bridal gowns are simple and chic, while our mix-and-match bridesmaid dresses were designed so that each 'maid can wear a style she'll love!
Most designers in the wedding industry are based on European size charts--forcing customers to order significantly larger than their regular retail dress size. However, Kennedy Blue's bridesmaid dresses run true to size, allowing you to feel beautiful and confident in the gown you order!
4. How do your dresses change with the seasons or trends?
In the past our styles have stayed pretty consistent, but we've become dedicated to keeping our line upbeat and on-trend. This past summer we added new silhouettes to our collection of short, lace bridesmaid dresses. We also just announced teal, royal, and champagne as the latest colors for our chiffon styles. In addition to these fresh looks, we've recently released an entirely new spring bridesmaid collection!
5. Why should customers go to Kennedy Blue instead of more traditional retailers?
With our At Home Try-On program, you can skip the crowded bridal salon and host a dress appointment in the comfort of your home. We take away the unnecessary stress of coordinating an appointment and squeezing into tiny dress sizes by giving you and your girls the experience of sampling a stylish, designer line sent straight to your front door. It's also the perfect service for out-of-town 'maids who want to try a sample style before they buy!
This program allows you to sample up to 3 dresses for 3 days. The cost is $10 for the first dress, and $5 for each additional. Venue Feature: Minneapolis Event Center
I’m always saying how Minneapolis needs more amazing wedding venues given the long wait at the local faves, so when a new one pops up I have to scream “Hooray!” {especially when it’s large and amazing!} If you are looking for a venue, I definitely suggest that you add Minneapolis Event Center to your list. I reached out to the amazing talent who helped redesign the space to share the features that make this such a great venue. Here, Michael Basler, Marketing & Design Manager, Minneapolis Event Center shares his insights. What attracts couples to the Minneapolis Event Center for their weddings?
Couples are attracted to the rich history of our 1850's building and how we've blended just the right amount of modern design features to appeal to current trends. Our space was designed by event planners and designers. Our couples don't need to add a lot of decor to have a beautiful experience.
How does Minneapolis Event Center stand out from other venues in the area?
Our event center has an all-inclusive package. Our clients don't pay extra for things like security, event staffing, coat check, audio visual, linens etc… We've invested in dozens of LED up-lights and floodlights, filling the space with vibrant color and texture. We're also a lot of fun to work with!
Tell us about the spaces available at the Minneapolis Event Center and how they are most often utilized for a wedding.
Our spacious ballroom seats 400 for dinner, with a built-in Morroccan Hardwood dance floor. There is also a 2,000 square foot glass atrium space adjacent to the ballroom which functions as a very comfortable cocktail/lounge area. The atrium wall of windows opens up to our private, brick patio and lush, shaded garden space that offers a great outdoor ceremony space. If it rains, we simply transition the ceremony into the atrium.
What transformations did you make to the space?
We stripped back 30 years of drywall and drop ceilings to reveal the original exposed brick walls and massive hand-hewn beams. The process of restoring the brick was very labor intensive, but worth the extra attention to detail. The atrium space was a complete loss and had to be completely rebuilt from the ground up. The original brick patio was also disassembled one brick at a time, and rebuilt by hand.
What are the benefits of hosting an event at Minneapolis Event Center?
We are a venue in the heart of Minneapolis with the added benefit of 1400 parking spots right across the street. That's a feature that is very important to our clients. When you host an event with us, you get the entire indoor and outdoor space for the day. We never double book our spaces. We offer state of the art audio-visual on our LCD flat screen TV's, our projector and screen, and high-end sound system. Our chairs are mahogany chiavaris, with neutral pads. Our in-house culinary team prepares amazing meals for any time of day or night, right from our on-site kitchen.
What are the benefits of your venue’s location?
The St. Anthony Main neighborhood is so convenient to major downtown hotels, nightlife, theater and shopping. The pedestrian friendly walking paths meander along the banks of the Mississippi River with a gorgeous view of the downtown skyline.
What suggestions do you have for couples getting married in your venue?
We recently hosted a wedding where the couple was married on our patio, and immediately following the ceremony, they entered a horse-drawn carriage and went for a ride along the cobblestone streets. I thought that was such a great idea. Their guests enjoyed cocktail hour, while the couple was able to spend their first married moments together, by themselves.
Venue Feature: The Guthrie Theatre
Here, we raise the curtain on the Guthrie Theater and share one of our favorite venues with all of you. Enjoy!
With floor to ceiling views of Minneapolis and the Stone Arch Bridge, the Guthrie Theater is the ideal venue to give your wedding that “wow” factor! We’ve had the pleasure of planning several weddings at the Guthrie and we cannot stress enough what an amazing and flexible space it is. With the renowned theater, you can expect amazing service and Karen Scher and her staff definitely deliver. We asked Karen to elaborate on what she feels makes the Guthrie Theater such an amazing venue. Here, we raise the curtain on the Guthrie Theater and share one of our favorite venues with all of you. Enjoy!
1. What do you think draws in couples most to the Guthrie for their weddings?
I think two things mainly—couples looking for a unique space or couples that have a place in their hearts for theater or just the building itself. I hear a lot of first date stories. The first wedding in the new Guthrie space was a wedding give away—a fantastic couple from NE Minneapolis who spent a lot of their dates watching the Guthrie be built—from the groundbreaking to the opening day. We’ve had a couple that were architectural interns on the building who made a super cool save the date card that was mini model of the building, with their faces as the portraits on the outside of the building. We also had a couple whose entire reception was the full works of Shakespeare—in 90 minutes.
2. Tell us more about your unique spaces: Endless Bridge, Pohlad Lobby and the Dowling Studio. What sets them apart from each other and what are their unique features?
The Endless Bridge is for more intimate ceremonies—about 50 guests work very nicely on the outside portion of the Bridge. The Pohlad Lobby & Dowling Studio have the same fantastic views of the river but on a much grander scale—up to 180 guests for a ceremony and reception. We combine both spaces with larger ceremonies in the Pohlad Lobby, cocktails on the Endless Bridge, and dinner and dancing in the Dowling Studio—making it a great overall Guthrie experience.
3. Because couples have to work around the Theater’s schedule, is there a time of year that works best for weddings?
Typically we have a month in the summer and the month of December.
4. Being a space of performance, what does this bring to weddings held at the Guthrie?
The Dowling Studio is a black box theater—a blank slate! You can do so much with lighting and décor. Soon I’ll be working with our Costume Rental department to add even more options for décor and themed weddings. I’m looking forward to some really interesting options for couples.
5. What suggestions do you have for couples looking to host their wedding at the Guthrie Theater?
Be flexible and creative!
Vendor Feature: Robert Evans
We are excited to welcome a new face in town, Robert Evans, a talented California-born {but midwestern at heart} photographer that we look forward to working with. Although his career has opened up many adventurous doors {from shooting celebs to hanging out of helicopters to chatting with Oprah Winfrey} don't let his experiences fool you. This down-to-earth Minnesota loving guy enjoys getting to know his couples on a personal level in order to make their wedding day photos a dream come true. Enjoy this exclusive Q/A + gorgeous photos and make sure to check out his website, Robert Evans Studios, Destination Wedding Photographer!
1. Fill us in on your history and what brings you to our sunny state.
I was born in Santa Monica, California and grew up just over the Santa Monica Mountains in the San Fernando Valley. My summers were spent in Indiana at my grandparents’ lake home, which provided me with a balance between big city and Midwest hospitality. Today, I find that I lean more Midwest than big city. I have always gravitated toward water and prefer a quiet lake to the restless ocean. Minnesota has a unique combination of both a thriving metropolitan city with lots of calm water, four seasons, and wonderful people.
After twenty-five years as a professional photographer, and thanks to the internet, I can live wherever I choose and that’s in Minnesota.
Much of my work is destination-based, but I am looking to build a family-oriented photography studio that supports the community in which I live, where I photograph weddings, family portraits, senior portraits, with some editorial and commercial work sprinkled in. Moving forward I would like to travel a bit less and be home to enjoy the beauty of where I live.
2. Coming from California with a celebrity clientele, how are you feeling about the transition to Minnesota?
I am very excited about living in Minnesota. As I mentioned before, my heart is more Midwest then LA. The celebrity world choose me, I did not chose it.
In 2000, I submitted my portfolio like an actor on a blind audition, for what I was told was a Shell Corporate Oil event; I got the part. I knew that the “event” was to be held on July 29, 2000 in Malibu, California. Two weeks prior I was sitting in my studio working and I heard on the radio that Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston were rumored to be getting married July 29th in Malibu. I laughed, I cried, I скачать драйвер для видеокарты freaked out. A plethora of emotions came flowing out all at once. It was such a huge compliment, that out of anyone they could have picked to photograph their wedding, I was the one they sought. I had two weeks to calm down and I told myself, “Go do what you love to do and have fun, they are just people.”
As you can imagine, from that moment on I was now titled a “celebrity wedding photographer”, a title I shy away from. I love photographing people’s weddings and on their wedding day, celebrities are no different from anyone else.
I am passionate about what I do and love capturing great images for anyone who appreciates great photography. I embrace all my clients with the same passion, regardless of their career. A one-on-one connection with my couples and clients is what I value most in my work. On a wedding day, I share such a personal part of my clients’ lives and I love my ongoing relationships with them year after year, watching their families grow and recording those moments for them.
3. Through your travels of shooting destination weddings and events, what is the most exciting experience you have had?
My work has taken me to photograph weddings and events all over the world. I have hung out of helicopters, shot a bride and groom with a tornado nearby in the background, photographed a wedding on an airplane 35,000 feet above ground officiated by Sir Richard Branson dressed as a priest, and shot four weddings in twenty-four hours. One of my favorite memories, however, is from a wedding I photographed in a thirteenth-century castle in North Hampton, United Kingdom, named Castle Ashby. It was a small guest list of about fifty. We stayed in the castle for three nights and the quaint chapel for the wedding was on the same grounds. As you can imagine, the photographic opportunities were endless. At night when we were not working, my crew and I would stay up late to make short scary movies, even having a very spooky supernatural experience with a ghost. Yes, this castle was rumored to be haunted and we definitely believe it based on our experiences there!
4. Where do you find most of your creative inspiration?
I work in the moment; I am inspired by my environment and lighting, and I play off of my couple’s personalities and emotions on the wedding day. My suggestion to my couples is to really experience their wedding day, feel what there is to feel, and don’t hold their emotions or your personalities back. Instinctively I know what to shoot when I see it, but if I try to force a moment, chances are the image will not look or feel authentic. Photography is my God-given gift and I am inspired every time I pick up a camera. I absolutely love what I do.
5. How would you describe your signature style?
I capture images how I see things. What I see through the lens is just as unique as a fingerprint; no two photographers are the same. My vision has common threads that run through it. Simplicity, emotion, architecture, depth, and movement are some of the traits that I see consistently throughout my body of work. I see things differently than other photographers and strive to not take the same images at my weddings. Each wedding is like a whole new canvas on which to paint. If I am excited at the end of the day, I know that my couples will be as well.
6. Do you have any suggestions for couples in search of a wedding photographer?
My best advice is to hire someone you would invite to your wedding as a guest. Personality and compatibility are so important to great wedding images. You must like the person photographing your wedding. Find someone with experience photographing weddings. A friend or relative with a camera usually ends in disappointment. There is much more to being a great wedding photographer than just taking pretty pictures. With experience comes wisdom. Knowing how to anticipate moments, reacting fast and professionally throughout the wedding day, and dealing with an array of personalities is very important. Finally, make sure you love and gravitate toward the photographer’s work and that fits your style. My photography is not a fit for everyone and that is fine with me. I want to work with couples who value wedding photography and are creative themselves. Photography is the only thing left after the wedding day is over. Make sure you do your homework and invest in your memories so you don’t have regrets. You only get one chance at great wedding photography.
7. What makes your approach different from other wedding photographers?
I would have to say my approach to wedding photography has been shaped by my twenty-five years photographing weddings. First, I make great effort to educate my clients about what to expect on the wedding day, taking them through some of the emotions and conflicts they might encounter. I help them understand what can make them late and how to keep themselves and their families on time in order to make photography a joy on the wedding day and not something they are dreading. I create a fun, relaxing timeline that works for everyone. Almost always, I get to shoot what I want and not what I get because I have taken the time to educate my couples. I shoot ninety percent of my weddings for myself. If I am excited at the end of the day I know my couples will be too as long as I too listen to my couple as they educate me on what’s important to them. Great communication is always key in any relationship.
8. Have you played with any other type of photography techniques or style?
Video and other photography techniques such as stop-motion, and time-lapse are a few styles with which I enjoy toying around. I have shot and directed a few music videos. Video is simply moving images and I think if you have the eye as a photographer, video is a natural transition.
9. Where has you work been featured for viewing?
Of course the best way to view my work is on my website, http://www.RobertEvans.com. In September of 2013, I was honored to be chosen as a “Sony Artisan of Imagery”, one of eight photographers in the world Sony sponsors and identifies as the best in their field. http://www.imagingedge.com/artisans. Over the years my work has been featured on many different media outlets around the globe. Of course if you Google my name or Robert Evans Studios, you can find many different stories and articles about my career. These are some of the places my work has been showcased:
The Oprah Winfrey Show, Good Morning America, Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood, Extra, MTV, CNN and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, amongst others. My photos have been published on the covers and featured in the content of publications including: USA Today, People magazine, Playboy magazine, Us Weekly magazine, HELLO! magazine, OK! magazine, Life&Style Weekly, In Touch magazine, Martha Stewart Living magazine, Inside Weddings and Grace Ormonde Wedding Style magazine to name a few.

James J. Hill Center
James J. Hill Center {formally James J. Hill Reference Library} is another one of our favorites due to its memorable setting. With styling of the Italian Renaissance, this venue has an exterior of Tennessee marble as one of its unique features. Also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, brides have picked this historic Reference Library for their wedding because of the incredible architectural detail, the amazing marble floors and the distinctive photo opportunities.
