Machine Shop // Madeline & Eric

Madeline & Eric attended University of Kansas together and their story began when they were assigned seats next to each other on a flight to Mexico their sophomore year.  This Kansas native fell in love with a Minnesota girl and ended up moving to Minneapolis three years ago to build his own life here {with the long-term goal of marrying Madeline, of course!}

In 2016, Eric customized the perfect engagement ring for Madeline and proposed on Iona’s Beach on the north shore of Lake Superior.  “I’m such a Francophile, so my mom took me to Paris to celebrate my engagement (and to find the perfect pair of shoes)!” says Madeline, “My wedding cocktail was even a Blush French 75 with edible flowers.”  Madeline and Eric’s wedding flawlessly expressed their fresh, modern style from the exposed zipper on Madeline’s gown to reversing the looks and putting herself in blush and her bridesmaids in white. The decor’s modern aesthetic was softened with romantic touches, such as the floaty overlay on the head table and the floral design on the back of the menu.

It was important for this trendy, modern bride to incorporate traditional touches to her special day. Eric saw Madeline for the first time as she walked down the aisle in her custom blush Tara LaTour gown and full blusher veil from l’atelier couture.  As her “something blue,” Madeline chose a vibrant blue floral pattern for her gown’s bodice liner. Her something “old” was a vintage monogrammed handkerchief from her great aunt and her "something new" was a Blush Mikimoto pearl that Eric gave her on the big day.

University Club // Lisa & Louis

Lisa, born and raised in St. Paul, wanted her wedding filled with St. Paul charm, so the University Club was the perfect fit for both their ceremony and reception.  The classic candelabras, damask and lace linens, lush florals and greenery played well with the elegance of the venue.  Though the wedding was late September, it turned out to be a gorgeous day.  Even the planter flowers outside cooperated for photos!  Guests drank and danced well into the night with the Apollo Quartet.  What a beautiful evening for a lovely couple!

Aria // Melissa & Tyler

After 2 years of dating, Tyler proposed to Melissa at their home in Boston.  As Melissa was getting ready for their date night, Tyler began the scavenger hunt proposal with an image of a moose holding a sign saying “Help Me!” which eventually led her to Tyler on one knee asking her to marry him.  After the proposal they were greeted by family and friends at dinner to celebrate!

With family all across the U.S. and a plan to move to Minnesota, Melissa and Tyler saw Minneapolis as a central location and a perfect way to show friends and family their soon-to-be home.  The ceremony was filled with romance and excitement as Tyler waited to see his bride for the first time as she walked down the aisle {though the couple shared a moment out of sight as they exchanged notes to each other}.

Following the ceremony, guests made their way to Aria which was detailed with hints of gold and blush tones.  Melissa needed her girly fix so a floral M and T were affixed to the church doors and flowers cascaded off of the head table.  And, of course, why have one bridal gown when you can have two? Given the post dinner festivities, a slimmer, more manageable gown was certainly in order.  “As a nod to our individual heritages, Tyler chose a German beer to share with our friends and family,” says Melissa, “and I wanted an Hora Loca {meaning Crazy Hour}, which is a Peruvian tradition!”  These elements brought dancing, fun and a limbo to their special day!

Machine Shop // Leslie & Samer

Most brides love flowers and gorgeous details, but this stunning Machine Shop wedding takes planning to a whole other level!  The focal point of the room was a 6' x 20' floating garden detailed with both large and miniature chandeliers suspended over the head table laden with flowers.  A soft mix of linens on the dining tables provided the backdrop for a stunning mix of boldly colored, unique blooms whereas bold linen choices were used upstairs.  Every detail, from the glassware to the china to Spoon and Stable chocolate truffles, was thoughtfully planned.  The invites were mounted on a fabric covered and gold foil embossed pocket.  The cake featured custom wafer paper florals and a floral print reproduction from Leslie's favorite restaurant wall.  From the incredible décor to the courses that were almost too pretty to eat {such as the grilled peach and fig salad} every detail was perfect.

Though we are keeping most of the images private at the client's request, we are happy to share some of the lovely details from the day with the client's approval!

Aria // Maddie & Ben

Cheers to two wonderful years of marriage for Maddie and Ben!

Ben and Maddie's first date was at a Starbucks in 2013 and one could say that they both knew they had met the person that wanted to marry that day.  They spent the rest of the weekend going on dates, leaving each other only to attend to prior commitments. These two agree that they are the best versions of themselves when they are together.  They truly married their best friend.  They were both ready to take the next step after a year and a half of dating.  Ben took notes from his parent’s proposal {and Rocky Balboa} 32 years earlier and proposed to Maddie in front of the Amur tigers at the Minnesota Zoo.  Ben had Maddie fooled all the way up until he got down on one knee.  He convinced her they were going to help their friend in the Amazing Race; it was quite the masterful plan!

They have such enthusiasm for life, family, and friends.   Although it was a bit chilly outside, their celebration was filled with love and lots of fun {and the sun even peeked out which allowed them to capture breathtaking images}!  The décor consisted of gorgeous chandeliers suspended above the full length of the head table at Aria.  The use of blush and gold colors and mix of centerpieces added to the warmth and glow of the space.  The dessert table was split in two with one side dedicated to chocolate and peanut butter lovers while the other side consisted of light and fruity desserts to showcase the bride and groom’s different tastes.  The Johnny Holm Band had guests dancing and goofing around all evening.

It was such a pleasure working with this lovely couple and making their dream wedding a reality!

Paikka // Joe & Adam

These two gents are two of the nicest {and funniest} guys you will ever meet so it is no surprise that we had an amazing time planning and personalizing Adam and Joe's celebration! We made sure to incorporate as many special details as possible that were exclusively about the couple. A surprising {and unexpected} detail from their wedding was the penguin ampersand on their invitation suite, which happens to be an Adam's favorite.  Typically with couples, flowers are a popular design element, however, Joe and Adam were looking for a more masculine feel, so we utilized bold greenery and plants instead.  There was not one flower! The design of the sliding doors provided the color palette inspiration. We included a few linens and custom runners to soften the space and otherwise used copper top tables to add that masculine touch. The couple wanted a non-traditional atmosphere, so food trucks and food stations were brought in to keep guests moving around and mingling. In place of cake we brought in Tina Rexing, owner of T-Rex Cookie, who modeled up her best "Betty Crocker" impression and personally served the cookies. T-Rex Cookies has long been a favorite farmer's market find of Joe and Adam's. For a late-night snack, the guys were looking for something crisp and flavorful {and with Adam's fancy for bagels} it was a quick decision to source bagels from Rise Bagel Co. The bagels were then displayed on a sandwich board custom made by the grooms.

From the heartfelt, emotional and hilarious ceremony to the final goodbyes, every moment was perfect! Check out the images below of Adam and Joe's special day!

Sunstone Winery // Carlyn & Erik

Carlyn and Erik started dating the summer of 2007.  They went to high school together but didn't officially meet until they were hanging out with mutual friends toward the end of the school year.  Eight years of dating, from high school to college and on to the real world, culminated in a proposal as Erik and Carlyn were on their way to his parents' home for Christmas.  They made a pit stop at the park where they had their first date. They walked and talked a bit, and towards the end of the walkway Erik stopped, got down on one knee and asked Carlyn to marry him.

“Erik and I knew we wanted to get married in the summer, and didn’t want a long engagement, which meant choosing a wedding date less than six months after we got engaged,” says the bride. Thankfully, eight years together meant they had a good idea of what they wanted, and we helped them make it happen in less than six months. Carlyn had dreamt of a vineyard wedding since a family trip to Tuscany in high school, and a trip to Healdsburg, California shortly before they got engaged proved it could be done without a passport.  The wedding highlighted an Italianesque feel that came from a stunning California winery, a gorgeous rustic wooden door which served as the backdrop to their ceremony that we detailed with fresh greenery, berries and flowers, and an open stone cave used for dinner that opened to an outdoor space for dancing.

It's safe to say that Erik and Carlyn made the most of the gorgeous setting, celebrating in the California sun and drinking wine from the venue's vineyard!

317 on Rice Park // Beckie & Jacy

Happy anniversary, Beckie + Jacy!  To celebrate these past three years, we're taking you back in time to relive this chic, gatsby-esque celebration!

Beckie + Jacy met in college choir years ago in Iowa, and just three years after their senior year, Jacy proposed to his best friend. These two hit every stylish note when planning their perfect wedding. Beckie always dreamed of having a Gatsby-inspired reception, and with its vintage charm and wood paneling, 317 on Rice in St. Paul turned out to be the perfect venue.

From the gorgeous linens and feathered centerpieces to their elegant cake and invitation suite, their 1920's inspiration was paired with modern aesthetics to make their vision a reality. As wine enthusiasts, Jacy and Beckie opted for a wine ceremony over the traditional unity candle. Parents each contributed a bottle of wine and a note to a sealed box for the couple to enjoy on future anniversaries {like today!}. We love working with creative couple's like Beckie and Jacy to create the wedding they've been dreaming of! To see more of this incredible wedding, head over to their gallery or to Style Me Pretty!

Guthrie Theater // Mary & Nick

Happy anniversary to Mary + Nick! To celebrate their two years of marriage we are reminiscing on their story!

Mary met Nick her first semester at Augsburg in speech class. On days when speeches were being presented, Mary couldn't help but notice Nick sitting down five minutes before class writing his speech, which somehow resulted in him doing better than everyone else. She was impressed and a month into the semester they began dating.

Years later, Nick was ready to propose, and he wanted to do it in a meaningful way that Mary could remember forever. He knew he would catch her by surprise no matter what his plan, since all of their friends and family expected Nick to propose on their upcoming trip to Vail, Colorado. After a few mishaps with his original plan, he made great dinner reservations and planned a perfect night out so that he could finally propose. As fate would have it, they couldn't find the key to the apartment and they had to cancel their dinner plans. Undeterred, Nick asked Mary to describe her "perfect meal." She suggested grabbing something from Sheesh in St. Paul, but he insisted she choose something fancier. Mary then jokingly said, "$200 worth of sushi." Nick immediately obliged and headed out to pick up all the sushi she could ever want from Saji-Ya in St. Paul. He returned with her dream meal and flowers and finally had the perfect moment to propose.

They wed at the Guthrie Theater in the Pohlad Lobby, which transformed into their dance floor after dinner.  We projected lit chandelier gobos at the walls of the Dowling Studio and detailed the space with romantic blush and gold tones and lots of sparkle!

Guthrie Theater // Jason & Rodney

Happy anniversary to Jason & Rodney! In honor of their anniversary, we are re-blogging their story and showing images from their special celebration!

In 1999, Jason and Rodney met after joining the same fraternity at the University of Minnesota.  After an immediate connection, their story began and the two started dating.  In 2003, Jason and Rodney had a civil union ceremony in Vermont.  Unfortunately, they weren’t able to celebrate with all of their friends and family due to the distance from home.  Fast forward some years and crazy enough, their 10-year anniversary falls just days after gay marriage was legalized in the state of Minnesota!  What better way to celebrate their 10-year anniversary than to legalize their long time union in their home state of Minnesota with their closest friends and family at the Guthrie Theater?

We incorporated the couple’s theme of “I Do, Take 2”, a perfect play off the couple’s unique story and their theater venue, and branded all of the paper elements with this overarching theme.  There was an intimate ceremony on the Endless Bridge {which offered gorgeous views of the Mississippi} followed by passed champagne, hors d’oeuvres, food stations, delectable desserts, and lively DJ sets throughout the night!

Minneapolis Event Centers // Ashley & Patrick

Happy two year anniversary to Ashley & Patrick!  In celebration, we thought we'd share their beautiful story and a few stunning images from their wedding.

Ashley and Patrick share a mutual love for travel and making big moves. They met in 2011 when Ashley took a last minute trip to Chicago from Michigan to celebrate New Year’s Eve with friends.  Patrick, who happened to be at the same party, tried to strike up a conversation with Ashley about his goofy panda shirt.  However, this technique was unsuccessful since she was going to veterinary school.  With her uninterested response he walked away speechless, but later in the night he tried once more and won her attention.  Ashley flew down to Texas three weeks later to visit Patrick, who had just made the move to Texas.  After another eight months, it was Patrick’s turn to make a big move which landed him in Minneapolis with Ashley and their dog, Daisy.

After Patrick proposed, they celebrated with a night of surprises and friends. Afterward, they flew to San Francisco to continue the celebrations with friends!  For their wedding, a fun-loving party was required. They flew in The Pete Saunders Band from New York for an incredible night of music and dancing.  The look was soft and romantic with billowing baby's breath garlands and baby's breath clouds that had cascading orchids above the tables, which were accented with pops of soft corals, pinks, and gold.  These elements created the whimsical feel they were hoping for.

Aria // Kaylee & Ryan

We can't believe it's already been four years since Kaylee + Ryan's gorgeous wedding! We're reposting their wedding blog in honor of their anniversary and we've included new details from today's reposted Minneapolis St. Paul Weddings magazine blog!

Kaylee and Ryan began their story at Cretin-Derham Hall through their shared love for hockey. As Kaylee told MInneapolis St. Paul Weddings magazine, "We'd always see each other around the rink, and we ended up hanging out and skating with each other outside of the rink too."

After high school their hockey careers lead them into a long-distance relationship, with Ryan playing Division 1 hockey at University of Wisconsin-Madison and Kaylee playing at Bemidji State University {later transferring to University of St. Thomas}. In 2010, hockey took Ryan to New York after signing to play with the New York Rangers, but two years later Kaylee joined him there.

Kaylee and Ryan knew their dream wedding would hold true to their Minnesota roots and include Irish and Urban New York touches. Their ceremony was held at St. Kate's and they continued the celebration at Aria with an Irish whiskey bar, a live band + DJ, and late-night snacks from Davanni's. They wanted their big day to be relaxed, laid-back and fun! Their reception displayed a gorgeous natural palette that played off silver and gold details. See the images from their gorgeous rustic-meets-glam wedding!

Lake Minnetonka Residence // Anna & Chris

Happy anniversary to Anna + Chris! This lovely couple met in 2013 and felt an instant connection and trust for each other. After a few dates, Chris met Anna's close-knit family and was adored by all of them. He soon joined family cabin trips and annual vacations. Once Chris received the blessing from Anna's family, he proposed on a family trip to Istanbul {with the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia as the backdrop!}

They knew they wanted to wed in Minnesota, and chose a personal and special place, Anna's father's home on Lake Minnetonka, where she grew up. Anna was unsure of what she wanted but was drawn to Gatsby design and lots of greenery. We pinpointed the perfect style for her wedding:  black-and-white stripe with lots of greenery which we carried through the linens and dance floor. Anna's family even decided to paint the pool to match the theme! We then incorporated pops of greens and yellows to bring some warmth with a stunning ombre ruffled cake, floral chandeliers and centerpieces. They wanted a casual and fun feel for their wedding, so in place of a formal sit-down dinner, they opted for lots of lounge seating and food stations that offered kebabs, sliders, and late-night snacks.

Not only did they style their wedding perfectly, but they added breathtaking details including a hookah tent with exotic accents {"As a nod to Instabul", says Anna} and a fireworks show toward the end of the night! Anna + Chris completed their special day by wading into the black-and-white family pool and shortly thereafter had friends and family join the fun. “It seemed like a moment out of some commercial, where you’re like, ‘People don’t do that, that’s not real, no one would do that... Well, we did that!” Chris told Mpls. St. Paul Weddings Magazine, which featured the wedding.

See the photos of the gorgeous couple {with Anna in her Anne Barge gown} and their special day below!

A'bulae // Sam & Aaron

I was so excited to see Sam + Aaron at Saturday's wedding this past weekend, just one day before they hit their one year anniversary! It was wonderful to catch up with this gorgeous couple.  So fun to look back and relive this beautiful day over again!

Aaron and Sam met at the University of Minnesota during their freshman year. After a few months of building up some courage, he finally asked Sam out on a date! Seven years later, Aaron proposed to Sam at the University of Minnesota's St. Paul campus where they started their story. At sunset, he got down on one knee and Sam said "YES!" before he could even finish asking! They've supported each other through many stages of life, including Sam graduating with a doctorate in Pharmacy and Aaron starting his career as a NHL hockey player for the Washington Capitals. Sam's letter to Aaron on their wedding day even stated, “After these last few years of long distance, chaotic moving and facing the unknown, I’ve come to realize you are my home.”

They celebrated their special day at A'bulae in St. Paul with their family + friends. We suspended gorgeous candlelight and florals that emulated chandeliers and decorated the head table with tall floral centerpieces. We then alternated between three stunning floral and linen looks throughout the rest of the seating to make for a cohesive and elegant look.  The roof top popped for cocktails with striking black and white striped linens and bold peonies.

Just look at how amazing their wedding was!

Minneapolis Event Center // Alyson & Geoff

In honor of Alyson + Geoff's two year anniversary today, let's take a look back at their special day! Alyson and Geoff went to the same high school where Geoff graduated with Alyson's brother. However, they didn't meet until a few years later at a Jack Johnson concert in Somerset, Wisconsin, where they officially began their story.

When we asked Alyson about the style for her wedding, she described it as “rustic industrial" and followed it {with a laugh} saying "I’m not even sure that’s a real thing!” Whether it is or isn't, we made it happen! The Minneapolis Event Center fit their vision perfectly with gorgeous steel details, exposed brick and open spaces. She stated that they “wanted to keep it elegant but casual” and that was executed perfectly down to the crystal, flower-filled ornaments we suspended above the head table. They also didn’t want to have any tall flowers on tables obstructing views because they wanted to keep things intimate, so we combined beauty and a petite structure to create flawless center pieces.

Look at all these amazing photos from the day!

LGBTQ Wedding Trends

With the Gay Pride Festival this weekend, we wanted to celebrate a few of our lovely couples we've been fortunate enough to plan weddings for and to give inspiration with trends we have noticed for same-sex couples!

Original Attire Choices  We love it when couples embrace the freedom to wear anything that fits their personal style! Of course we love wedding gowns and the traditional suit and tie, but Lawrence + Johnny looked very handsome in their casual attire.

Ceremonies in the Round  Most of our couples are choosing to modernize traditional ceremonies by having a less structured bridal party and ceremony. We see a lot of standing ceremonies where guests surround the couple and officiant, creating a very intimate setting.

Exceptional Venues  There are no limits to where you can celebrate your special day. Jason + Rodney had an intimate ceremony with their closest friends and family on the Guthrie Theater's Endless Bridge, which offered gorgeous views of the Mississippi River.  Lawrence + Johnny chose to transform Studio 1414, a photography studio.

Free Flowing Receptions  Couples are moving away from formal sit-down dinners and are utilizing the same space for both a ceremony and reception without the need for a flip. This format is more intimate, requires less space and gives you the option to have food trucks or stations.

Decor + Aesthetic  Overall, most couples want to break the mold and have unique details that speak to their long standing, committed relationships. Andrew + Brendan created a flawless wedding cake that told their love story from start to finish.

Unique Entertainment  If you're looking for a more relaxed feel, plan a reception like Lawrence + Johnny's where they included fun activities such as pool and darts.

With no set traditions for same-sex couples, we have complete freedom to create an unparalleled event and to uniquely personalize their special day.

We had so much fun being a part of Karla + Tim's special day. As you know, our goal for each wedding is to make it a personal expression of the couple's style, and our lovely bride wanted bling so... we gave her bling {and lots of it} on her big day! Diamonds are a girl's best friend, am I right?!

For their ceremony, we suspended gorgeous, crystal chandeliers amongst flower garlands and hanging jewel strands. Cafe lights wouldn't do so we draped jewel strands above the ceremony seating instead! The centerpieces displayed hanging gems, and we also incorporated jeweled details into their wedding cake {that seemed just too beautiful to eat} in order to keep the look cohesive throughout.

Karla is such a beautiful woman with a great sense of style {did you notice that Inbal Dror gown?} and from the look on Tim's face, he thinks so too!

Mill City Museum // Katharine & Ryan

It's true, one of the most common wedding fears is a little drizzle on your big day {especially for those who plan an outdoor gathering}. But let's face it, rainy weddings make for beautiful pictures and great stories! Just ask Katharine + Ryan!

These two met in Minneapolis where they spent just three short months together before Katharine’s job moved her to California. Nine months later, Ryan joined Katharine on the west coast but they returned to Minneapolis for their Mill City Museum wedding. “I love the history of Minnesota and how it grew around the mill and the factory. I always saw myself getting married in the ruins.” However on their wedding day, the weather chose not to cooperate.

Although the sun wasn't shining, these two didn't let the rain "ruin" their special celebration. The misty weather made for perfect conditions as Katharine + Ryan cuddled up next to each other under the same umbrella during the ceremony while guests gathered under the overhang provided by the ruins. They exchanged vows {written themselves} and Katharine promised “in sickness and in health, for richer for poorer, and to make Ryan “breakfast sandwiches for dinner”.

This lovely couple took full advantage of their rainy wedding and their positive demeanor was certainly contagious.

See for yourself!

Minneapolis Event Center // Hayley & Luke

We were so fortunate to be a part of Hayley and Luke's wedding. They couldn't have been sweeter or more adorable! Hayley and Luke started "dating" in junior high and haven't taken their eyes off each other since. As a young couple, they wanted to incorporate into their big day youthful and fun aspects in a sophisticated way, so we made it a priority, personalizing every detail.

To enhance the privacy and intimacy of their ceremony we brought in a truck load of arborvitae plants to fill in the existing plants along the fence enclosing the area. The ceremony also featured a custom floral backdrop made of fresh moss with pops of pinks fading to lighter shades in an ombre fashion. It was repurposed at the reception as a gorgeous photo booth backdrop.

After the ceremony, Hayley and Luke decided to ride off in-style with a pedicab succession down the Stone Arch Bridge. At the venue, we took advantage of the beautiful wood beams and created a chandelier of flowers hanging from ribbon, spanning the length of the head table. Instead of a traditional cake, we brought in delicious donuts and cupcakes for the reception. There were so many options to choose from, we made that {tough} decision easier by creating a menu detailing each flavor. A late night food truck with gooey delights such as pulled pork and caramelized onion grilled cheese sandwiches wrapped up the festivities.

From the gorgeous floral décor to the delicious catering sweets, every moment was perfect! Check out the images below of Hayley + Luke's special day!
