Mother of the Bride Fashion

 Mother-of-the-bride fashion has traditionally had a bad reputation for being behind the times and frumpy. But luckily for all you moms out there, mother-of-the-bride fashion is evolving and there are plenty of fashionable options to choose from now! So where do you even start?! We’ve created a simple guide to help both the bride-to-be and her mother choose the perfect dress.

1. Consult with the bride {and groom!}

We all know that the couple are the most important two people on their big day, and the MOB’s outfit should never outshine them. It’s also important to keep in mind what the bride envisions for her mother. The bride often helps pick out her mother's dress, but a conversation about what she envisions is great too. We recommend an in-person conversation since tone of voice can get lost over text or email!

2. Compliment the wedding party

The MOB should never wear the same dress as the bridesmaids, but her dress should compliment what the bridesmaids are wearing.

3. Be venue appropriate

Just like the bride chooses her dress to be venue appropriate, the MOB should as well. A strapless dress may not be appropriate for a church wedding, but may be fine for a beach wedding. Keep the formality of the venue top of mind when deciding on what to wear.

4. Coordinate with your future in-law

The MOB and the MOG {groom’s mother] should coordinate their outfits to avoid a clash or uncomfortable situation. Having a conversation about the formality, color, and style of their outfits is a great way to make sure they’re both on the same page!

5. Expand your search beyond “Mother-of-the-Bride” dresses

Expand the search beyond the conventional category of MOB dresses. There are so many dress options that restricting yourself to a “mother-of-the-bride” dress is extremely limiting. Instead, search for preferred length, color, sleeve length, etc. to help widen your selection.

Hopefully these tips will guide your shopping as you search for your fabulous dress!
