Claire & Jason // The Minneapolis Institute of Art & The Whim

Claire and Jason first met at a wedding in 2019. While they immediately hit it off, Claire was in a relationship at the time, so nothing came about. The second time they met was a few years later through the dating app Bumble; Jason immediately remembered Claire and matched with her, but Claire didn’t recognize him and passed him by! More time passed and Claire, who was growing frustrated with online dating, finally reached out to Jason in a last-ditch attempt—almost nine months after they initially matched. When Jason made the connection for Claire back to their first meeting at the wedding, she immediately insisted they meet. Their first date was a romantic night out on New Year’s Eve 2021, and after that date, Claire told her mom she was going to marry Jason.

When beginning their wedding planning process, the couple loved the idea of an intimate, black-tie ceremony for close friends and family, but also wanted to celebrate with the broader circle of friends they had both met along their journey of finding love.  So, they decided to do both and created an entire weekend dedicated to their wedding! Their celebration was split into two days: a formal, intimate black-tie ceremony and formal dinner on Friday, and a fun, vibrant, all-out party on Saturday!

On Friday, Claire and Jason were married in a romantic ceremony at the Minneapolis Institute of Art among 46 of their close friends and family. Following the ceremony, guests were invited downstairs where open art galleries and a string quartet entertained them. Gorgeous canapes from Paris Dining Club, including Thyme and Gruyère Gougères with Fromage Fort and Fines Herbes, Demi-Sec Tomato, Olive and Chèvre Tartlets, and Duck Rillettes with Preserved Satsuma, gave a hint to the guests that this night was going to be a true culinary experience! At dinner, the guests sat at one long family table with the couple. The space was filled with lush florals and an elaborate tablescape.  A formal, five-course dinner with wine pairings was served and included such delights as Cauliflower Bavarois, Wagyu Zabuton, Seared Scallops, and a Cheese Course/Sauternes pairing followed by a traditional Mexican vanilla wedding cake. The guests enjoyed live piano music throughout the night and left with take-away favors of Chocolate Mendiants with Pistachio & Apricot.

But, Claire and Jason’s wedding celebration was nowhere near over!

On Saturday, it was time to party! Claire hung up Friday’s ballgown and slipped into a white, strapless jumpsuit for the Saturday festivities at The Whim. Here, 200 guests gathered for a lively party bursting with color and energy.  On top of the already abundant floral displays, several large-scale paper flower structures were spread throughout the space, with floral projections displayed on the walls. Photos from the previous night were staged in virtual frames and also projected on a large wall for guests to enjoy and share in the intimate festivities. Instead of a sit-down dinner, the event was cocktail reception style with smaller round tables and lounge groupings for a more relaxed vibe. Five food stations were set around the space, serving more than 20 unique items from different regions around the world. Their favorite desserts were also served, including pie, cake pops, and ice cream sandwiches. The party was abundant with entertainment options.  An 11-piece band performed all night, providing excellent live music for dancing.  Additional activities included a fun photo booth and a live painting station, where guests each added their own contributions to an art piece to be displayed in Claire and Jason’s home.

The two nights could not have been more different yet each uniquely played to the various sides of the couple and their wishes for their wedding celebration, or should we say celebrations!

Wedding Coordinator Versus Wedding Planner

Wedding Coordinator Versus Wedding Planner

Couple married at alter wedding decor, wedding planning inspiration ceremony design

You’re engaged—congratulations! Now, you’re likely starting to think about your wedding day and all the details that go into it. With all of the information you need to consider, you might start thinking: Should I hire a wedding planner?

Your wedding day should be all about celebrating you! You’ll want to live in the moment, and fully enjoy it, without stress. There are so many moving parts during your day, from coordinating vendors to managing timelines, and it can be overwhelming to handle everything yourself. If you’re too worried about the logistics, you’ll miss out on really experiencing your day. That's where professional help comes in—ensuring that everything runs smoothly so you can focus on what matters most: creating memories and enjoying your celebration. Plus, so many people rely on their friends and family for help, but they should be celebrating too!

There are several types of planning services, with two of the most popular being wedding planners, and coordinators. The question is, which role does which job?

When it comes to choosing between a wedding planner and a coordinator, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the differences. With so many factors to consider, many couples struggle to decide which service best suits their needs. Fortunately, this blog is here to help! By breaking down the key distinctions and benefits of each option, we’ll guide you through the decision-making process, making it easier to find the perfect fit for your big day.

WHAT DO WEDDING PLANNERS DO?

THE ROLE OF A WEDDING PLANNER

Wedding planners are your go-to resource from the very beginning of your planning journey. Depending on your needs, you can choose from different levels of service, whether it’s a full-service planner who handles every detail or a partial-service planner whose service may be scaled back. Either way, the core purpose remains the same: they guide the process from start to finish, ensuring everything stays on track. From helping you make informed decisions to easing the workload, a wedding planner becomes a key piece in bringing your vision to life. They’ll be with you every step of the way, playing a pivotal role in turning your ideas into reality, so you can enjoy the process with less stress.

SERVICES PROVIDED BY WEDDING PLANNERS

Many people worry that if they aren’t in charge of planning, they lose control and their wedding vision won’t come to life, but the truth is quite the opposite. A good wedding planner doesn’t take over—they work with you to bring your ideas to life in the best way possible. They offer insights on what’s achievable and guide you in refining your vision, all while managing the behind-the-scenes tasks. From coordinating vendors to handling layouts, managing deadlines, and keeping track of payments, planners take care of all the time-consuming and often stressful details. Without these distractions, you’ll actually be able to focus more clearly on your wedding vision, ensuring that the day unfolds exactly as you imagined, without the hassle of juggling logistics.

ADVANTAGES OF HIRING A WEDDING PLANNER

As mentioned earlier, with a wedding planner by your side you won’t have to worry about a single detail slipping through the cracks. Your planner is driving the bus—meaning they’re taking the wheel on the planning process, ensuring that your planning is staying on track while managing next steps. You can relax in the passenger seat, providing feedback and making decisions. Your planner serves as the primary contact for vendors, saving you time and sparing your inbox from hundreds of emails! Having your budget managed by a planner ensures that you will get the biggest impact for your dollar and prevents you from getting lost in those small purchases. You’ll have the peace of mind that your vision is in expert hands—guided by someone with years of experience in creating beautiful weddings.

Essentially, you’ll be free to focus on the fun part of planning while your planner guides the process and does all the busy work. From start to finish, you can rest assured that your dream day will unfold exactly as you imagined, without you having to lift a finger.

COST OF A WEDDING PLANNER

Wedding planners do cost more than coordinators, but that price reflects the extensive work they do. While the investment may be higher, the range of services a wedding planner offers goes far beyond what most people expect. In fact, when explaining our services, we often find it easier to describe what isn’t included—things like ceremony design, RSVP tracking, and wedding party coordination. Aside from those few exceptions, a full-service planner can manage just about everything else, ensuring that every detail of your wedding is expertly handled. From concept to execution, they take care of the entire process, giving you the freedom to enjoy the experience without the stress of managing it yourself.

The cost of wedding planners also varies; don’t be sucked in by the least expensive option. Quality of services and experience vary tremendously, and this is one area where you get what you pay for.

WHEN TO HIRE A WEDDING PLANNER

If you’re finding yourself short on time for planning, unsure of how to bring your design vision to life, in need of expert guidance, or simply wanting to avoid the stress of managing it all, then hiring a wedding planner as soon as possible is the perfect solution! It’s never too late—while most couples hire a planner from the start, a wedding planner is willing to pick up the pieces at any stage during the process. If you find you’re in too far over your head, it’s time to start looking for a planner.

WHAT DO COORDINATORS DO?

THE ROLE OF A COORDINATOR

At their core, coordinators are responsible for ensuring that everything runs smoothly and is executed flawlessly on your wedding day. They step in to manage the day-of logistics, making sure all the pieces come together as planned so you can focus on enjoying your celebration without worrying about the day-of details.

SERVICES PROVIDED BY COORDINATORS

Unlike a wedding planner, a coordinator won’t be involved throughout your entire wedding planning journey. Their role typically begins closer to the big day, focusing on finalizing details and ensuring everything is ready to go. They assist with final vendor confirmations, direct the rehearsal, and take the lead on coordinating the day-of logistics. Essentially, while the coordinator helps bring the physical elements of your wedding to life, you’re still the one in charge of the planning process. They execute on your plans; the creative direction and major decisions are all yours.

ADVANTAGES OF HIRING A COORDINATOR

One of the biggest advantages of hiring a coordinator is that they take all the stress off your shoulders on your special day. Your friends and family are there to celebrate you—not to be responsible for setting up, managing logistics, or tearing down the ceremony and reception. With a coordinator, you don’t have to worry about asking loved ones to handle the heavy lifting. Instead, they can enjoy the day alongside you, while your coordinator ensures everything is seamlessly executed behind the scenes. And, depending on the service, they will help clean up plans and point out any issues that need attention leading up to the big day.

COST OF A COORDINATOR

The cost of hiring a coordinator is less expensive than a planner, but the price can vary depending on several factors, such as the amount of work they do in the lead-up to the event, the number of hours they’re onsite on the day of your wedding, and whether they bring additional staff to assist. These factors all contribute to the overall price, as more preparation, longer hours, and extra hands often require a greater investment. However, the peace of mind that comes with knowing your day is in capable hands is well worth it.

Similar to a planner, the price will vary greatly amongst coordinators. Make sure to look at their experience, because knowing how to handle last-minute fires on the big day requires experience and vendor connections!

WHEN TO HIRE A COORDINATOR

If you’re confident in your ability to plan your wedding and have the time to handle the details but don’t want to invest in the full cost of a wedding planner, a coordinator might be the perfect option for you. With a coordinator, you can take charge of the planning process but still enjoy a stress-free wedding day, knowing someone else is handling all the small details. It allows you to go through your big day, fully immersed in the moment, without worrying about timelines, setup, or vendor coordination. If you know you want a coordinator (or one is required by your venue) then hire one right away, as they book up early. However, like a wedding planner, you can still hire them at any point during your planning process.

WEDDING PLANNERS VS COORDINATORS: WHICH IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

“WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR ME?” ASK YOURSELF THESE QUESTIONS:

DO I HAVE TIME TO PLAN? Wedding planning is a HUGE time commitment, and it will be difficult if you live a busy lifestyle! Wedding planners will save you time throughout the planning process, coordinators won’t. Depending on the size and complexity of your wedding, planners will average 125-300+ hours when planning and executing a wedding.

DO I WANT HELP WITH DESIGN? Some planners are also wedding designers, and can help in that regard!

AM I ORGANIZED? Organization is essential for pulling off a perfectly executed wedding day, so you must reflect on whether you are truly capable of it. You’ll need to be the primary organizer when working with a coordinator, while wedding planners will be organized for you.

WHAT IS MY BUDGET? Maybe you would love a planner, but your budget doesn’t allow it; then go for a coordinator and see if they have any add-on services that will help you get the help you need.

DO YOU GET EASILY STRESSED? If you’re confident in pulling the planning off, you might only need a coordinator! However, if simply thinking about communicating with all of those vendors and designing your wedding sounds overwhelming to you, you’d benefit from working with a wedding planner.

FINAL THOUGHTS…

If you’re struggling to decide between a wedding planner and a coordinator, it’s important to carefully weigh the pros and cons of each to see which is more practical for your specific needs. Some couples enjoy planning every detail themselves. They are organized and detail-oriented, making a coordinator the ideal choice to handle the execution on the big day. On the other hand, if you’re unsure where to start or want guidance throughout the entire process, a wedding planner is a better fit, offering more comprehensive support.

Still need help weighing your options? We’re here to help! We offer a range of services from coordination to full-service planning. No matter which service you choose, we’re dedicated to making your wedding day everything you’ve dreamed of.

Meghna & Amit // The Lowlands

Meghna and Amit first met on the dating app Coffee Meets Bagel, Amit having initiated the conversation with the most Minnesotan ice breaker: “mittens or gloves?” The conversation flowed, with the soon-to-be couple learning that not only did they previously attend the same college, they also lived right down the street from each other! A first date was quickly arranged at Eat Street Social in Minneapolis, and they ended their night playing games at the Up-Down arcade bar. Amit was infatuated with Meghna right away and even wanted to go for a kiss at the end of the date, but Meghna ran away! The dates continued, many consisting of impromptu walks with long discussions around Lake of the Isles. They decided to make their relationship official one day after they had gone out with friends and then stayed up all night talking with each other–they were completely inseparable!

When making decisions for their weekend of wedding celebrations, Meghna and Amit knew it was important to them that the celebrations embraced tradition, but also incorporated more modern takes that represented them as a couple. The ceremony and pre-celebrations took the more traditional route, while the wedding venue and reception reflected Western celebrations. For the colorful Sangeet the night before their wedding, the bridesmaids and groomsmen were free to wear their favorite colors. The Sangeet decor was differentiated from the wedding day by incorporating boldly colored sarees as the backdrop to the sangeet performances, and vibrant florals were placed upon bright and highly contrasting linens.  Henna artists were available for mehndi. Friends and family performed heartfelt dances and songs to entertain the couple and guests, and then everyone joined in the fun and danced for hours.

For the actual wedding day, the couple wanted to go more traditional. The couple began the celebration with a Baraat, another traditional ceremony to embrace Amit’s Punjabi culture. In this tradition, the groom arrives to the ceremony on a horse with his family and friends leading the way in dance. This is a callback to long ago when a groom would travel for days to the bride’s home by horseback. Amit’s sister fed the horse lentils, for good luck, and the rest of his family added threaded embellishments to the horse to match Amit. Meghna decided on a look that was a beautiful fusion of both her and Amit’s cultures. In Punjabi culture, where Amit’s family is from, brides typically wear a red/pink lehenga. Meghna chose to go with a deeper red lehenga with intricate gold embroidery. Because sarees are a wedding staple in Maharashtrian tradition, which is Meghna’s culture, she draped her lehenga like a saree. During the ceremony, Amit wore a groom’s sherwani in a beige color that complimented Meghna’s red lehenga. He also wore a safa, a traditional headpiece that completed the overall look. Prior to dinner, Meghna changed into a lovely purple lehenga and Amit into a dashing tuxedo.

To add a modern touch to their traditional day, guests were treated to tiered wedding cake, donuts, a photo booth, and top 40 hits as they partied the night away. Their two-day event was filled with symbolism, tradition, and color, but also Western touches to make their wedding their own.

Benefits of a Wedding Planner

“WHY SHOULD I HIRE A WEDDING PLANNER?”

Organizing a wedding can be stressful, especially for those who are working full-time or have limited knowledge of the wedding world. This is especially true if you are planning a destination wedding. It can be incredibly overwhelming to figure it all out on your own, resulting in anxiety, frustration, and tears. Who wants all this stress during what is supposed to be the most magical time of your life? Today, 29% of all couples choose to hire a wedding planner – and with our services, 100% of couples are happy that they did!

It’s not just the planning that can be stressful, but the day-of as well. Do you want to be responsible for answering vendor questions, making sure everything is being delivered as promised, and setting up place cards and signage? What about keeping the day on schedule? Someone’s got to do it. It’s not the venue’s job and trust me, you don’t want to burden friends or family with this.

If you’re faced with the decision of whether to hire a wedding planner and are asking the question, “Why should I hire a wedding planner?”, this blog is for you! We’ll discuss the benefits of hiring a wedding planner, the types of services generally offered, how to find the right wedding planner, and cover common misconceptions.

BENEFITS OF HIRING A FULL SERVICE WEDDING PLANNER

You save time, reduce stress, and don’t have to worry about project management

An analogy we like to use while discussing wedding services is “driving the bus.” With a full service wedding planner, you don’t need to worry about project management–aka, driving the bus! We take the wheel and help you curate your vision, scope your wedding, build a budget, ensure the planning is on track, do all the legwork, and present you with options. You are along for an amazing ride and your hands are free to focus on the fun details and decision-making with our guidance. With our Coaching & Coordination service, you’ll instead be behind the wheel driving all activity while we’ll be coaching from the backseat whenever you need direction. And without any planning service, you’ll be driving completely alone without navigation.

You get expert advice and a professionally managed wedding without having to have the answers yourself

Don’t know what you want or where to start? We know what to ask to get you to a concise, cohesive vision and we have processes that guide us through the planning process so you don’t have to worry if your planning is on schedule or what needs to happen next.

Don’t know how much your vision will cost or where to go to achieve it? Having been in this industry for so many years, we know what things cost and where to go to get nearly anything you want!

Don’t love details, or don’t know what they are? Logistics and coordination are time-consuming and confusing, especially for those new to the wedding scene. Experienced wedding planners have extensive knowledge and familiarity with exactly what is needed, not to mention a long list of trusted vendors to ensure the perfect event. Booking a vendor is just the first step; there are a million little details and interdependencies that then need to be worked through and communicated, which can make it easy to forget little details and deadlines. Planners live in the details and are skilled at ensuring all the interdependencies between vendors are worked through and nothing is missed.

Don’t know what you want in terms of decor or don’t know how to make a cohesive wedding from all the looks you do like? Wedding planners, and specifically those that also offer design services like we do, know how to pull from you the look of your wedding by asking loads of detailed questions and turning that into a cohesive wedding vision. By really getting to know you, your style, you likes and dislikes, we can see what you have a hard time visualizing. And in the end, you get a wedding that is the perfect representation of you!

Don’t know how to make your wedding unique? We do! Professionally planned weddings should stand out as not only beautiful but also as high-energy, expertly choreographed events with little to no downtime or lags. Your guests should feel like the wedding truly represents you as a couple, and it should literally be talked about for months/years to come if we’ve done our job right!

You’ll save money through budget creation and management

An experienced wedding planner will listen, help you flush out your wants and needs, and provide you with a solid, detailed budget for how much creating and executing your wedding will cost. Wedding planners know how to make the most out of your budget and how to maximize the impact of your planning dollars. And, because we have plenty of connections in the wedding industry, you will receive vetted recommendations for all the best vendors in your price range.

Your wedding will stand out

Good wedding planners focus on the guest experience and create and customize events that look like YOU, not your average cookie-cutter wedding! We know how to structure a timeline, manage vendors, and ensure that everything runs smoothly. Couples repeatedly tell us that they hear from guests that our weddings are the best weddings they have ever attended. It’s because we’ve done this many times, and we know tips and tricks that make a wedding stand- out!

You don’t need to manage wedding day details

We’ll take care of all the day-of management details with vendors and guests, so you won’t need to worry about unforeseen issues and emergencies! You and your family and friends don’t have to setup or tear down a thing, because we have it handled.

Figuring all this out on your own is too much without experience, and it will show on your wedding day!

We cannot express enough how incredible our experience was with Style-Architects Weddings from Day 1! From the moment we met, [Style-Architects Weddings] understood our vision and went above and beyond to bring it to life. Every detail was meticulously planned, and their creativity, professionalism, and calm demeanor made the entire process stress-free and enjoyable.

TYPES OF WEDDING PLANNING SERVICES

Services, of course, vary from business to business, but here is a summary of our services.

Full-Service Wedding Planning

This is the creme de la creme of wedding planning services perfect for any busy professional couple who wants to have all the fun of wedding planning with as little of the legwork as possible. We guide you through the process, taking your ideas and turning them into a gorgeous event that totally speaks of you as a couple. Full-scale design services ensure a stunning wedding with loads of little details. And three planners on the wedding day ensure everything runs to perfection.

Partial Wedding Planning (Diet Full-Service)

This service is very similar to full service, but we limit our planning hours to keep the fee at a rate that works for most. Clients may take on some responsibilities assigned to them to ensure hours are kept in check, but the planner is still running the show to ensure everything is planned to perfection. You still get to make all the fun decisions, but we take the wheel and your worries with us! Of course, all the time in the final month is included to lock down details. Two planners on the day of the wedding ensure everything runs smoothly.

Design Services

Design services are included in our full service offerings, but if you are more interested in coordination services but also want help with design, then we offer design services as well that can be added to any coordination service. We really get to know you, your style, your likes and dislikes and what defines you as a couple, and then design a look that speaks to it all. Revisions ensure that it truly hits the mark and you are always welcome to go decor shopping with us because we know how much fun it is! We ensure your wedding decor is unique and truly a reflection of the two of you!

Coaching & Coordination

Our Coordination services start with a timeline discussion early in the process which focuses on flow and energy. No boring timelines with downtime here! Then we step in one month out and work with you to ensure all the little details are nailed down with your vendors. Coaching is something we also offer if you want more assistance and someone to lean on during the planning process with questions, for advice, or to simply check in. Regardless, we are onsite the day of your wedding with two planners for unlimited time. In our minds, coordination is a must!

"[Style-Architects Weddings] was on top of every last detail of our amazing wedding. She always kept us on track and managed to pull vague ideas out of our heads and create what we couldn’t even imagine."

- Johnnie Hicks

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT WEDDING PLANNER FOR YOU

Determine your wedding planning needs and overall budget

All wedding planners are different, so the first step is determining your wedding planning needs and overall budget. Are you looking for full service planning, some design help, or just day-of coordination? List out the help you want and what your weaknesses will be when it comes to planning. Create your guest list and determine your overall budget. A planner will be able to look at this information and assess whether they have the skills, vendor relationships, and expertise to deliver for you.

Conduct research, gather referrals, and look at reviews

Research the different wedding planners in your area, and ask if there are wedding planners people recommend. Check out galleries of previous weddings they designed and check client testimonials to get a feel for how they work and what clients say about their experiences. Checking reviews is essential to ensure a positive experience with your wedding planner.

Evaluating potential wedding planners

Before immediately deciding on a wedding planner, contact several studios and have some consultations and interviews. You can communicate your needs and ideas with a potential planner, and see if you believe that they would be a good fit. Planners have many different areas of expertise, so while one planner may be highly recommended, they may not be a good fit for your personality and working style, or perhaps they are not as experienced, for example, in design. The goal is to find the right planner for your style, needs, and budget. Come to the consultation prepared with questions. Have they won awards? How long have they been in business? Do you work with the owner, or a sub-contractor? Do they make themselves available evenings and weekends? What is their business mix (i.e. are they mostly full service or mostly coordination)? If you are looking for a full service planner, how many weddings have they planned at your overall budget?

Making the final decision and signing a contract

Once you have completed all of the above, you can make a confident decision and sign that contract!

“Without an eye for design and a lack of creativity on our end, we really leaned on [Style-Architects Weddings’s] expertise in this area and wow did she deliver. Every element was spot on from the cake to the table setting to the floral, and everything in between. The design and overall vibe was better than we ever could have imagined.”

- Rishi Sen

COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT HIRING A WEDDING PLANNER

“It's too expensive!”

A wedding planner is a quality investment. You can immediately tell the difference between a wedding that is planned by a planner and one that is not. Planners eliminate your stress and months of worrying about details. In fact, a wedding planner may save you money by ensuring the most impactful use of your budget!

“But I want to plan my wedding!”

And you will, even if you have a wedding planner. Planners help you focus, help you make decisions, and remove lots of to-do’s and follow-ups from your to-list. You are still making all the decisions that decide the final outcome, without all the busy work to get there.

“It takes away from the personalization of the wedding!”

Planners actually help you figure out how to personalize your wedding. We can collaborate on ideas and give recommendations on what works best.

“It's unnecessary if you have family and friends to help!”

Do not do this to your family and friends! While it’s understandable to turn to them for help, it’s a big commitment. It provides unneeded stress for your guests to be responsible for setting everything up the day of, and no one wants mom having to tear down at midnight!

[Style-Architects Weddings & Events] is to the point and GETS THINGS DONE. Problems inevitably arrive throughout the complicated planning process which are beyond anyone's control, but before [our planner] even tells you she has solutions proposed and the problem resolved. She has great relationships with every vendor in town and she works with them seamlessly to bring your ideas to life. Planning a wedding can be stressful, but when working with [Style-Architects] you don't have to worry. What she created for us was magical, we couldn't be happier and have not stopped receiving compliments from our guests.

- Molly Ordway

Paige & Johnnie // Metropolitan Ballroom and Clubroom

Paige and Johnnie met at Urban Eatery, a restaurant on the ground floor of the Beach Club Residences where Johnnie lived at the time. He frequently visited the restaurant, and it wasn’t long until he became completely smitten with a very cute server — Paige! When he asked her out, she immediately accepted, and the rest is history. The two knew immediately that this relationship was different then ones they had before. They quickly fell in love, becoming both fun-loving best friends and devoted teammates. Johnnie even developed a newfound love for cats (a must for a relationship with Paige) and became enamored with her two cats, Simon and Spike. Together, they formed their little family.

For their wedding, the couple knew they wanted a classic theme with an over-the-top, 40’s New York, swanky jazz club vibe. The Metropolitan Ballroom and Clubroom was the perfect venue choice with its tiered ballroom seating, prominent stage, and massive crystal chandelier.  They took full advantage of the stage with a ten-piece band that performed during dinner as well as into the night.  The jazz club vibe was also infused into the cocktail hour with a jazz trio, complete with a trumpet and lounge singer perched on the piano. Two magnificent champagne towers stood near the doors for the guests as they entered cocktail hour.

The décor was extravagant and dramatic, with lavish florals (including an amazing floral tunnel!) and striking gold accents against black backdrops. The dining tables were lavishly set with opulent décor, and paired with gold dining chairs. The linens were a gorgeous combo of rich velvet, brocades, and sequin overlay. On the upper level, thematic lounge groupings with deco furnishings and a gold front mirrored bar were arranged for guests to relax and enjoy signature cocktails. Paige’s favorite color, olive green, was featured prominently throughout the design with olive green velvet napkins and table numbers, velvet invitation liner and silk ribbon, and the velvet ribbon on the cake.  Even the seemingly simple cake was embossed with the retro patterning from the invitation suite.

The dinner was just as high-end as the decor. It began with a relish tray presented in French service style by the servers. Rather than a traditional salad course, the couple opted for soup to be served instead. For the main course, guests dined on wagyu steak and seabass. A special wine pairing accompanied each course for the ultimate dining experience. For dessert, guests dined on mini French pastries and chocolate peanut butter wedding cake.

As the festivities drew late into the night, no one wanted this perfect day to end. The extravagant, sophisticated, and glamorous celebration was a captivating representation of Paige and Johnnie’s desire to be transported back in time for their wedding day.

The 2024 Classic Wedding Trend: A Fresh Take

If there’s one theme that has been trending this season, it’s the classic wedding. The vintage, more traditional look is back in full force—but it’s not your grandparents’ wedding! Despite the resurgence, many couples are opting for little changes in the details to keep their weddings from becoming too dated. When done right, the blend of old and new makes your wedding truly timeless!

1.     Piped Wedding Cakes

Traditional wedding cakes definitely inspire the thick, piped frosting we see in cakes today, but there’s the slightest difference in appearance. You can include some modern touches by using only one tier rather than multiple or adding a taller cylindrical shape (called a double barrel) to your tiers rather than opting for the more old-fashioned squat-tier style. Another recommendation to personalize your wedding cake and give it a modern twist is to incorporate color! (We suggest leaving off the cheesy cake topper!)

2.     Champagne Towers

Champagne towers have exploded in popularity in recent years. While the towers themselves are a magnificent statement, there are still ways you can decorate them even more! Embellishing with florals or bows (which is another trend we’ll talk more about!) adds a fun pop to your décor.

3.     Classic Cocktails

Add a fun twist by including more old-fashioned cocktails to the vibe, taking even your menu back in time. Old Fashioneds, manhattan, sidecars, gimlets are all the rage. Splurge for the coupe glasses and don’t forget a fun garnish of dried fruit, a personalized floating decal, or a stenciled design on top.

4.     Bows

Ribbons and bows are back in full force, and not just in weddings—this trend has taken over the whole world of fashion. However, while ribbons can certainly be included in your fashion choices for your big day, they don’t need to be limited to just that. Bows are being included on invitations, linens, napkins, and even the cakes themselves!

5.     Photography

Backlit and flash photography is a gorgeous way to capture your memories, but in past decades was used to create very posed portraits. Today, using a more documentary-style photographer catches more candid shots, capturing beautifully genuine moments in a very striking way!

6.     Customized Matchboxes / Matchbooks

Matchbooks are a traditional favor originally handed out for smoking at wedding celebrations, an occurrence that is uncommon in the current day—and we can certainly say that modern couples don’t hand these out to encourage the habit! Nowadays, personalized matchbooks or matchboxes can be handed out as a charming memento of your wedding. These decorative designs can be a fun display even if they're not used and a great addition to any matchbook collection!

7. Attire

From tuxedos and bowties, pearls, silk and satin dresses, gloves, and (once again) bows, classic attire is booming in popularity. Pairing a modern gown style with silk or satin fabrics can give your dress a classic touch while still appearing on trend, which can be beautifully accentuated with bows and gloves. Pearls can be included through draping on the dress or in veils, bows, gloves, and decor. Experiment with the tuxedo by changing the color or fabrication or adding a unique touch to the bowtie!

Megan & Willy // Mosaic

Like many modern-day couples, the story of Megan and Willy started on Hinge. Their first date was drinks at Parlour Bar in the MInneapolis North Loop where the conversation was effortless and fun. As their relationship progressed, it continued to be just as effortless and free-flowing as that first date. Moving in together right before the pandemic hit and adding their Bernese Mountain dog, Tito, into their home began what they saw as a future together. Soon after, they bought their first home.

So when it came time to plan their wedding, Megan and Willy envisioned it to be effortless and fun and include their shared passions for Tito, of course, great food, interesting cocktails, and fun activities - everything they enjoy in their spare time. They selected a non-conventional venue, Royal Foundry, to keep the mood casual and fun. When we discovered the venue was closing, we quickly pivoted to a new venue, Mosaic, where we recreated the charm that drew them to the previous venue - the large FOUNDRY letters. We created a large M and W and hung the floral within for their ceremony and headtable backdrop - just as we had planned at the previous venue. Smoked old-fashioneds, French 75’s, and Finnegan’s beer flowed as guests enjoyed delicious food, live music, and plenty of activities, including a photo booth and arcade games Big Buck Hunter and Basketball Double Shot, both of which Megan and Willy own in their basement. Dancing to the Bluewater Kings, Megan and Willy created exactly what they wished: a perfect night-on-the-town experience for their guests.

Their personal style and home decor inspired the wedding design. Cozy, industrial, natural colors and fabrics paired with beautiful whites, creams, beiges, and soft blush with touches of moody black created a soothing aesthetic. Three different linens, centerpieces, and place settings created texture and interest at each and every table. Black flatware, mixed chargers, and smoky glassware added even more drama. For the head table and parent tables, a piece of wheat was added to honor a family tradition on Willy’s side to represent an abundance of love. Tito was included by welcoming each guest as the face of the wax seal on the menus.

Megan and Willy’s main priority was to immerse their guests in their life and who they are. Their event was elegant yet playful, stunning, but not overdone; words which perfectly describe this amazing couple!

Anna & Max's Groom's Dinner

Not only do wedding planners plan weddings, but we also plan the events surrounding the big day. So, when Style-Architects Weddings’ owner Rachelle Mazumdar’s son married Anna, who also plans weddings for Style-Architects Weddings, you can be sure that no detail was left to chance!

The idea started with Anna and Max wanting an intimate backyard BBQ with friends and family, instead of a large welcome dinner at a venue or restaurant. However, groom’s dinners are the perfect opportunity to have fun with your decor and to bring in some personal touches that maybe hit the wedding day cutting room floor. Given Max’s Eastern Indian heritage, we decided to go all out for the groom’s dinner with a more contemporary Indian fusion spin on the backyard BBQ.

A brightly colored floral installation and low tables layered with orchids and floating blooms were the focal point of the tent. Layered rugs and soft floor cushions added texture and comfort for guests. Spice-colored velvet linens and orange and eggplant paisley linens added a contemporary touch. Varying rich color throughout the tent added a fresh, vibrant feel to the decor. Contemporary, bhangra club fusion tunes added to the fresh, playful ambiance.

The inspired decor was accompanied by traditional Indian catering and a henna artist for the guests to experience. The catering was set up in stations for guests to be able to grab as they pleased and to keep with the casual backyard BBQ feel.

The couple and Max’s parents traveled to New York City to find the perfect outfits. In a traditional Eastern Indian wedding, the bride dresses in red (instead of white), so Anna opted for a reddish-pink lehenga with gold embroidery and Max, a cream-colored Kurta and matching scarf.

It was such a beautiful evening full of cultural significance, family warmth, and excitement - the perfect start to the perfect wedding weekend! So, our lesson to you is to have fun with your groom’s dinner, and if you are struggling to truly personalize the event, reach out to a professional like us!

Kelley & Patrick // The Machine Shop

Love at first site isn’t always the beginning of a couple’s love story, but when it comes to Kelley and Patrick, it was. After being introduced through a mutual friend, Kelley thought that Patrick was the most handsome man, and Patrick thought that Kelley’s smile was so infectious that she made the room stop. Because Patrick was very shy, Kelley thought he wasn’t interested. The start of their relationship was a simple study date and slowly evolved to a class trip that took them all the way to China. They never looked back.

To be honest, Kelley struggled to decide on a decor vision that she felt was elegant and romantic yet reflected their outdoorsy lifestyle. Wildflowers have always been something they admire on their hikes, so that became the focus of the decor vision. Kelley did not want the look to be too pastel, so the linens were left neutral and navy was introduced to add a more masculine touch. Flowers raining down the entire length of the room provided a magical setting and the twinkle lights added a stunning glow after dark. Kelley is from Oklahoma, so she (or at least her mom!) needed more sparkle - so chandeliers were also added. Lush floral centerpieces with bright colored florals, homemade dried pressed floral tapered candles, and of course, the dried pressed flowers on the cake and in the invitation suite completed the look.

Kelley and Patrick wanted their guests to find it easy to have a good time with great people, great food and drinks, and great music. Kelley’s parents added to the fun by surprising the couple with a performance by the O’Shea Irish Dancers. {Kelley has loved Riverdance since she was very young.} A raised stage was brought in for their performance which transitioned to a raised dance stage as well. {Fortunately, no one fell off!} Kelley loved the idea of a raised dance floor - little did she know the real reason behind it! Kelley surprised the groom with bubble hockey and foosball for cocktail hour. There was a band as well as late-night DJ, fun college-inspired late-night snacks and more dessert varieties than any one person could try.

It was an incredible night and one we are very grateful for being a part of!

2023 Wedding Trend: Pantone Color of the Year

Introducing Pantone’s 2023 Color of the Year: Viva Magenta!

Magenta has always been a favorite color of mine, so I have to agree: long live Magenta! Viva Magenta is a stunning, pinky-reddish hue, which can be paired with so many other colors to create a wide variety of looks. When paired with blush, the look is tonal, soft, and romantic. When paired with deep jewel tones like emerald, turquoise, or citrine, the look is rich and dramatic. For a vibrant summer look, pair with primaries like yellow and orange, but add a rich, champagne-colored linen (preferably not white) to keep the look elevated. Whether used as the main event or as a supporting color, Viva Magenta adds life to the party!

Viva Magenta makes a big impact with florals, paper, candles, and bridesmaid dresses. Because of its versatility, it can be added nearly anywhere to add that pop of color.

Don’t be afraid of Viva Magenta’s bold, attention-grabbing hue. It will enhance your wedding beautifully!

Holiday Wedding Decor

Let’s face it, although winters can be hard they are beautiful and they set the stage for magical weddings. However, often when you hear of a wedding around the holidays, images of evergreen, wreaths, and literal holiday elements flood your thoughts. Just because a wedding is over the holidays doesn’t mean it should look like a holiday party! In fact, we go so far as to say it should not look like a holiday party. You can use acorns and bows, but class it up with gorgeous, rich linens and florals mixed in. We are here to challenge the narrative and inspire you in a different direction if you are considering a winter wedding.

We suggest three winter decor directions: Elegant Jewel Tones, Frosty Winter Wonderland and Cozy Cabin. All are without the kitch of the holidays, taking your decor from Happy Holidays to elevated winter wedding. The chilly weather outside sets the stage as your guests enter your stunning reception, filled with subtle nods to the season.

Check out what winter wedding decor inspires us!

Alex & Luke // The Machine Shop

Alex and Luke’s story is the classic story of a hockey player meeting the figure skater. Though they both attended Shattuck, they actually met in Boston. Alex was there for an ice show and Luke for a hockey game. Though neither originates from Minnesota, they now call it home where Alex teaches power skating and Luke is an attorney. As a figure skater, Alex is all about the show but she wanted clean lines, contemporary style, and the only sparkle - in the ceiling in the lighting design. White, black, gray, and taupes were the colors of choice, but with rich velvet linens to warm the look and pops of contemporary black flatware. Minimalistic floral designs kept the look sophisticated and clean. The ceiling was beautiful and romantic. The lighting mixed fairy lighting curtains with edison bulbs which added an industrial feel but also a nice warmth that filled the space. The romantic floral curtain doubled as a ceremony backdrop and then was trimmed to frame the band during the reception. Alex and Luke's style created a beautifully sophisticated minimalistic event unlike anything seen at the Machine Shop before.

TREND ALERT - Bring on the Black!

The hottest trend in weddings is BLACK! No longer simply relegated to tuxes, invitation print, and gold/black color palettes, black is now the primary color with other tones playing supporting roles in the background. Bold and dramatic, and sometimes moody, black accents add depth and certainly make a statement. Some think that weddings should be bright, airy, and neutral to stand the test of time. At Style-Architects Weddings, we do NOT think that is the case. We believe that, although light, bright, and neutral are beautiful, when black takes center stage, magic happens!

We have created some beautiful weddings with black as the primary focus. Check out how we added black to the forefront of some of our couples’ wedding designs.

Want your wedding to stand out from others? BRING ON THE BLACK!

Allie & Kevin // Aria

Allie and Kevin met on a work project in Copenhagen. They fell in love, bonding over horror movies and travel. Soon they became known for throwing the biggest, best annual Halloween bash. When it came time to plan their wedding, they decided to up the ante and host the biggest, most signifiant Halloween party they would ever throw! Originally, the plan was to get married on Halloween Day in 2020, but Covid changed their wedding date to Halloween Eve 2021. Allie and Kevin welcomed their guests and kicked off the weekend at Psycho Suzi’s with a full on costume party. For their wedding, they wanted a moody vibe with Halloween touches. The guest tables were adorned in rich, moody linens and the candelabras, hanging plumosa and other details added an eery mansion feel to the space. The fog created as guests danced also contributed to the vibe. The escort cards were a reference to one of their favorite horror movies, "The Shining." To top it all off, Allie’s skull heels and Kevin’s skull cufflinks and tux liner added whimsical Halloween personality.

Allie and Kevin's playful personalities shown through all night from their fun guest book and choreographed first dance to literally loading everyone on a bus to head to a late night Tiesto concert at 11pm!

Their blend of elegance, timelessness with a memorable flair, and Halloween touches created a beautifully designed Hallows Eve wedding.

What Makes for the Best Wedding Day Timeline

No matter what kind of wedding you’re having, one thing is for certain, TIMING IS EVERYTHING! With so many moving parts to the day, it’s imperative to have all the details mapped out.

It might sound silly, but we pride ourselves on our timelines! Our main focus - KEEP THE ENERGY UP! We’ve all attended weddings as guests with massive downtime and endless speeches that seem to drone on and on. These situations are a result of poor planning and bad timelines!

Below is what we consider when creating a Style-Architects Wedding timeline:

1. First thing we is consider whether you have any time limitations with your band or DJ. If the band is restricted to playing three hours of music over a five hour period for example, then we want to make sure to time dinner to ensure the band has time to fulfill their allotted performance time. For example, you wouldn’t want to start a dance in this case at 9pm as it wouldn’t allow for three hours of play with required breaks.

2. Next, “What time is sunset?” Factoring in the sunset time will ensure that you and your fiancé have time to run out for some golden hour photos. These photos typically take place anytime between 45 minutes to an hour before sunset. Depending on the time of year, you may have to jump out during dinner service and we want to ensure that your meal is served hot and is ready as soon as you return.

3. Based on the answers to 1 & 2, we help determine the ceremony time. From there we map out everything after the ceremony. 99% of our couples use the East Coast wedding timeline format. This includes dancing before guests are invited to sit for dinner and splitting up speeches and important dances throughout dinner service. Peppering toasts and dances throughout dinner service ensures that guests keep focused on what is going on and keeps things moving and the energy flowing in the room. When your guests sit too long, they start to lose focus and lose steam to join the dance after dinner.

4. What are your top three priorities for your wedding? If “guest experience” is important to you {and who doesn’t think that?} then we build that into the finer details of the timeline. Ensuring ushers are ready to greet guests as they arrive at the venue, having cocktails passed for quicker service during cocktail hour, and minimizing the time between transitions in the evening are just a few of the timeline adjustments we make.

5. Once the entire evening is planned out, we start from the ceremony and work backwards to the morning. Although the morning is typically crazy with getting ready, photos, and all of the emotions, we still want to ensure that all the details are accounted for including time for first looks with bridal party, parents and, of course, your fiancé, family and wedding party photos, and arrival times for vendors, wedding party, and guests. Wedding day timelines guide every move that day and having everyone and everything accounted for is important.

Of course, not all weddings are the same but we want the same things for each wedding day: keeping the day moving, keeping the day energized, and ultimately GETTING THESE TWO MARRIED!

If you are looking for advice on your wedding day timeline or are interested in a planning package, please feel free to fill our contact form here. We would love to talk and get your planning started!

PARTY MINIS

Party minis are a fun fashion style suitable as bridal shower, bachelorette, and secondary wedding day looks. This look is for the bride that wants to showcase her fun fashion sense and show a little skin on her big day.

ELABORATE BALLGOWNS

Even with a surge of non-traditional designs, there is still a demand for glamorous ballgowns. Feel like the belle of the ball in a ballgown that showcases large sleeves, colorful embroidery, and amazing fabrics to make your gown stand out from the rest.

(Left: Elie Saab, Middle: Hermione De Paula, Right: Monique Lhuillier)

MINI BOW DETAILS

Each season, designers are always looking for ways to incorporate unique details, and this year it is mini bows. This whimsical design element is taking shape in many forms.

(Left: Legends by Ramona Keveza, Middle: Yelena Yemchuk, Right: Rosie Assoulin)

OVERSIZED FLORAL MOTIFS

Floral designs are a staple in bridal wear, but this year the motif is oversized, turning this traditional aesthetic into something modern, fresh, and new!
